S. HOLSTEIN.
HEEL PROTECTOR. N0. 596 878. Patented Jan. 4,1898
WITNESSES: mvamun -885 Zszei'n 4C- BY W ATTY'S.
UNITED STATES PATENTI Orricn.
SELIG I-IOLSTEIN, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOSE]? I'IOLSTEIN, OF SAME PLACE.
H EEL-PROTECTOR.
SPEGIFIGACIPION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,878, dated January 1898.
Application filed February 24, 1897. Serial No. 624,876. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SELIG HOLSTEIN, a citizen of the United States, residin g in Paterson, county of Passaic, and State of New Jersey,
5 have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heel-Protectors; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it o appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a boot or shoe heel with a heel-protector of simple, strong, and durable construction, neat in appearance, and which, as it forms a part of the heel, will prevent the latter from being Worn off at its lower portion, as is usually the case.
The invention consists in the improved heel-protector, in its connection with the shoe or boot heel, and in the combination and arrangement of the various parts, substantially 2 5 as will be hereinafter more fully described,
and finally embodied in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a shoe provided with my improved heel-protector; Fig. 2, an under- 0 neath view of Fig. 1, and Fig. 8 an enlarged perspective View of the heel-protector.
In said drawings, a represents a shoe-heel, I
and b the protector, arranged thereon and forming a part of said heel.
The protector 5 consists of the segmentalshaped metallic plate 0, provided with a series of perforations or holes d,and at its outer edge with a downwardly-projecting rim or flange 79 corresponding in shape and outline to that portion of the heel which is to be completed by the said protector. A V-shaped projection f is centrally arranged on the segmental-shaped plate 0, and its lower surface is in the same plane as the lower surface of 5 the rim or flange 22. By this arrangement the protector is greatly strengthened and its bearing-surface increased. The segmentalshaped portion 0 is adapted to be inserted betweentwo of the successive layers or lifts of leather forming the heel and to be secured 5o thereto either by nails 6, penetrating the said plate and the upper portion of the heel, orby nails 6 and e, alternately arranged and penetrating, respectively, the upper and lower portions of the heel and the plate.
From the foregoing it can be seen that a. protector of the above description will answer all requirements, and on account of its lower surface being slightly higher than the lower surface of the heel the disagreeable clanking while walking is avoided. Furthermore, as said heel-protector forms a part of the heel and actually completes the same in shape, construction, and appearance, (as it is not visible on account of being colored the same as the heel,) it therefore does not detract from the neat and ordinary appearance of the shoe or boot.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- A shoe-heel protector, consisting of a segmental-shaped plate, having its inner edge approximately parallel with its outer edge, of a rim or flange projecting downwardly from the outer edge thereof, and of a V-shaped block or projection arranged approximately in the center of the segmental-shaped plate and projecting downwardly therefrom and connecting thelatter with the central portion of the rim or flange and having its lower surface in the same plane as the lower surface of said rim or flange, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of February, 1897.
same HOLSTEIN.
