Be it known that I, CHARLES E. GUILLAUME, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Allegheny, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Iron Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanyingdrawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in metallic fences, and has for its object to construct a fence of this nature, such as are ordinarily known as 0rnamental fences,that may be readily changed so as to present an entirely different appear ance by merely substituting different ornamentations between the pickets and without removing or changing the original pickets of the fence.

A further object of the invention is to construct a fence of this type that may be easily huilt and fastened together and when all parts are in their proper position will present an extremely rigid construction.

A further object is to construct an ornamental fence simple in its form throughout, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and strong, durable, and eectual in the performance of all its functions.

lVith the above and other objects in view the invention iinally consists in the novel construction, eembination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularlypointed out in the claim.

In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like letters of. reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views,in which- Figurel is a perspective view of a panel of metallic fence constructed in accordance with my invention. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the lower Stringer. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a portion of the top Stringer. Fig. e is a detail view of one of the removable ornalnentations. Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the pickets. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of one of the pickets forming the post and end of panel. Fig. 7 is a front View of a part of one panel of fence constructed in acgetheiz cordance with my invention and showing manner of securing pickets and the flats holding the ornamental portions. Referring now to the drawings by referenceletters, a represents the upper or top Stringer, which is formed of 0rdinaryU-iron and is provided at suitable intervals with triangu lar-shaped slots Z) to receive the pickets c, which are formed of ordinaryangle-iron, provided With a pointed upper end .CZ and the lower end partly cut away and adapted to protrude through the triangular slot e, which is cut in the lower Stringer f. The central picket c of each panel is preferablyT arranged to protrude through the lower stringer the same distance as the end posts g g of the panels, said posts being formed from ordinary T- iron having a pointed end g', and secured to each post by riveting or other suitable means is a brace ZL, also formed from T iron. A crossbrace Z: is secured to said brace Zz and the post g, serving to add strength to the post and brace. The posts g g are provided with apertures to receive pins Z Z, which protrude over eachside of the posts and engage inthe ends of the U shaped stringers aand ,',iwhere they are fastened by means of screws m, passing through apertures n, provided therefor in the U-shaped stringers, said screws engaging in the pins Z Z in apertures n n', provided for the same. By constructing the pickets of unequal length and forming theornamental pieces With one end protruding above the other the arrow-head rappearance is given to Veach picket, and at the lower Stringer these ornay mentations o may be formed with the ends curving toward each other, so as to prevent the arrow-head appearance in a straight line along the fence. It Will be noted that this same principle may be carried outl in the construction of gates, balustrades, and the like, and that When so constructed the fence Will present an extremely rigid form, and, if ydesired, the general appearance of the fence g throughout may be changed by removing the ornamental portions and substituting others in their places Without any other alteration to the fence.

It will be noted that various changes' may be made in the details of construction Withrout departing from the general spirit of my invention; f f f Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
