ATENT BURGLAR-ALARM.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,379, dated December 28, 1897'. Application iiled March 24, 1897. Serial No. 629,063. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern,.-

Be it known that I, JAMES S. PATES, residing at Midway, in the county of Woodford and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and Improved Burglar-Alarm, of which the following is a specication.

lWIy invention is in the nature of a portable burglar-alarm which can be readily adapted to a door or window in such a manner that,

With other obj ects in view, which will hereinafter be made apparent, the invention consists in a burglar-alarm embodying the peculiar combination andconstruction of parts such as will be irst described in detail, and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a view illustrating my invention as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a view illustrating the'same connected with a window. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional View illustrating the clamp device as applied in a narrow space between the door and casing. Fig. 4 is a similar View illustrating the clamp set in a wide spacing between the door and casing. Fig. 5 is a detail view, on an enlarged scale, of the alarm devices. 7 is a detail view of the clamp devices hereinafter referred to.

In its practical construction my invention consists of an iniiatable body having an airtube provided with a whistle or other airop erated alarm at its outer end and a clamp device adapted to be inserted inl the space between the edge of the door and the casing or the window-sash and casing.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which like numerals indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 indicates an iniatable bag, which may be of any desired form and which has an air-tube 2, the upper end of which is connected with an internallythreaded ring 3, having an enlarged or bulb portion 4., whereby the end of the iiexible tube can be securely held thereon at a suitable point on its exterior face. The air-bag has a iexible eye 5, to-which is connected the iieXible band or cord 6, which forms a supporting-loop for the said bag, as the same is adapted to be slipped over on the knob of a door, as shown in Fig. l, or other fiXed supporting means.

7 indicates an alarm device, which in the present instance is in the nature of a whistle which has its air-inlet end terminating in an eXteriorly-threaded shank S, adapted to be screwed into the member 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 6.

9 indicates a clamp, which consists of` a base member 9, terminating in a iiat sharpened end 9b and having an eye 9c, in which is held the pintle lO, on which is pivotally secured the hinge clamp member ll. This clamp member is formed of spring metal and has its portion 11b normally held against the base 9 in such a manner that it will be forced out to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 7. The clamp member l1 has its inner portion made approximately parallel with the base 9, as shown at 11b, which portion is bent out at au angle indicated by 11 and then bent forward, as at 11d, and terminating in a sharpened portion, as shown.

The object in providing a clamp member as shown and described is to provide for securing such clamp either in a narrow or wide slit or space between the door and casing, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4., and also to provide for a positive clamping or squeezing of the tube 2 to prevent the escape of air when such clamp device is secured in a wide or narrow space. Furthermore, as the member 1l has its inner end made to engage the base 9, so that it will be normally forced outward, as shown in full lines in Fig. 7, it follows that the closer the ends of the clamp are brought together the more tightly will it squeeze the tube 2 and close off the escape of air, such arrangement of clamp device, however, providing for a positive closing oft of the tube, even when the ends thereof are at or near the position shown in full lines in Fig. 7.

In operation the bag is filled with air,which is readily accomplished by disconnecting the whistle from the member 3, using the member 3 as a mouthpiece, and holding the clamp with the lingers about the neck of the tube, it being obvious that by arranging the parts as shown the operator can hold the clamp and the end of the tube with one hand and the clamp compressed, so as to prevent the escape of air, while using the other hand for securing the whistle to the mouthpiece 3. Having thus blown up the bag, it can be supported on the knob, as shown in Fig. l, or upon a nail or other suitable support and the ends of the clamp shoved in between the end of the door and the casing, as shown in Fig. 1, or between the sash and the windowcasing, as shown in Fig. 2.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the full advantages of my invention will be readily understood. The same can be manufactured at a very small cost and will be found a very useful device for the household, and especially for travelers.

Having thus described my inventio11,what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A burglaralarm, comprising an airholder having a flexible escape-tube provided with a whistle or other alarm mouthpiece detachably connected therewith, and a clamp device adapted to be secured at any point on the flexible tube and having its ends adapted to be secured between the door and casing, whereby to close the said tube substantially as shown and described.

2. A new and improved burglaralarm,com prising an air-holding bag having a flexible hanger and a tube having a mouthpiece, a Whistle having a threaded shank to engage the mouthpiece, and a clamp consisting of a base member having a sharpened front end, a spring member hinged thereto in such a manner as to open normally outward from the base said clamp having a portion held in close relation to the base, an outwardly-bent portion and a forwardly-extending member held normally spaced apart from the base member all being arranged substantially as shown and for the purposes described.
