COMBINED HINGE AND HANGER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. VVATRoUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Combined Hinge and Hanger, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of my invention are to provide a device which can be used either as a hanger or as a hinge for sashes; that is one which is so constructed that when the parts are arranged in one way, they will serve the function of a hanger, and when they are arranged in another way they will serve the purposes of a hinge.

A further object is to provide a device of this character which is so arranged and constructed that whether it is used as a hanger or as a hinge, the sash can be easily and readily removed from the window frame for the reason that the parts of this device which are attached to the sash and those which are attached to the frame of the window are detachable from each other.

A further object is to provide a device of this class in which the pin can be easily and readily removed to make a right or left hanger or hinge, thus saving the necessity of detaching the parts of the device from the sash casing in accomplishing this result, and further to provide a device for supporting a sash from either the top or the side casing as desired which is particularly advantageous owing to the fact that often times a molding, bead or over-hanging lintel obstructs the placing of the hinge or hanger either at the top of the sash or at the side, but seldom prevents it being placed in either one or the other of two places so that the device is adapted for use in connection with nearly all of the ordinary window casings.

A further object is to provide a hanger which will not be affected by the swelling or shrinking of the parts to which it is attached.

My invention consists in certain details in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the device as a hanger and attached to a sash in such a way that the sash is supported from the hanger and is so arranged that the sash can be detached from Specification of Letters Patent.

the casing easily. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing the device attached to a sash and used as a hinge and so arranged that the screen can be easily detached from the casing. Fig. 5 is an end view of the hook, and Fig. 6 is a side view of the hook.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate a cross piece in the upper portion of the casing and the numeral 11 to indicate the side of a window casing.

The numeral 12 indicates the sash which is to be held in position by my hanger which consists of a hook having a body portion 13 therein, which body portion has screw openings extending through it so that screws 14 and 15 may be used for securing itto the window casing. At one end of the body portion 13 of the hook is the hooked portion which is curved outwardly from the body portion 13 to form the curved portion 16 and then is bent to a position substantially parallel with the body portion and has its outer end bent slightly outward at 17 from the body portion to make'this portion better adapted for receiving the pin of the pin carrying portion when the device is used as a hanger as shown in'Fig. 1.

Extending through the center of the curved portion 16 of the hook is the opening 18 designed to receive the pin of the pin carrying portion when the device is used as a hinge, as shown in Fig. 2. The hook when used as a. part of a hanger is designed to be attached to the cross piece 10 of the casing and when used as a part of the hinge to be attached to the side of the casing 11. The pin carrying portion comprises a body 19 which has two screw holes in it to receive the screws 20 and 21 for securing it to the sash or screen. One end of the body of the pin carrying portion is bent until its outer end engages the body portion 19 to form the pin receiving loop 22. Extending through this pin receiving loop is the pin 28 having the head 24 at one end thereof and its other end pointed at 25, thus adapting it for easily entering the opening 18 in the curved portion of the hook, when the device is used as a hinge.

When it is desired to use this device as a hanger, two of the hooks are attached to the cross piece 10 of the window casing and in substantially the position shown in Fig. l, and two of the pin carrying portions are secured to the upper portion of the sash and in such position thereon that the pins 23 will be received by the curved portions of the hooks as shown in Fig. 1. These hooks may be between the pin carrying portions, or they may be on the outside of the pin carrying portions by simply reversing the positions of the pin carrying portions as may be desired by the person using them.

When the device is used as a hanger, it will be seen that the sash is capable of being swung outwardly whenever it. is desirable t do so, and this screen may be easily and readily detached without removing the hooks or the pin carrying portion. The attaching and detaching ot' the sash to the casing is facilitated by the shape of the hook portion for the reason that the outer ends of the hook portions of these hooks are bent outwardly and away from the body portions of them.

Vixen the device is used as a hinge, the hooks are secured to the side 11 of the easing so that the hook portions will be at the upper ends of them when in this position, as shown in Fig. 2, and the pin carrying portions will be attached to one side of the sash or hinge in such a way that the pins 23 will enter the openings 18 and the lower edges of the loops 22 will rest upon the upper and outer surfaces of the curved portions 16 ot' the hook, as shown in Fig. 2. \Vhen the device is arranged in this manner, the sash can be swung on the hinges which are thus provided, when it is desirable to remove the sash. This can be easily accomplished by simply raising the sash slightly, thus raising the pins 23 out of the openings 18. Assuming that it is desired to swing the sash in the opposite direction from that shown in Fig. 2, the pins 23 would have to be withdrawn from the loops 22 and reversed; that is, put in from the opposite end of the loop 22 from that shown in Figs. 2 and 3 as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. Thus by the use of my device the necessity oi? buying various forms of hangers and separate hinges is obviated as my device may be used when it is desired to swing the sash to the right or left.

it will be seen from a careful inspection of Fig. 1 that the pin is capable of sliding laterally on the curved portion of the hook without causing any binding or straining oi? the parts of a hanger or any loosening oi the screws, even though the sash swells, nor will the parts be thrown out of engagement with each other by any possible shrinkage of the sash owing to the fact that it operates as well at any time when the parts are in engagement with the hook portions oi the hanger. My device differs greatly from the ordinary hanger in this respect as it is not affected or thrown out of opera tire position by the swelling and shrinking of the sash and casing.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, therefor is- 1. An interchangeable hinge and hanger con'iprising a hook with a curved portion therein through which an opening extends, a pin carrying portion, the pin in which is designed to enter the curved portion of the hook or the opening through this portion.

2. An interchangeable hinge and hanger, comprising a hook having an opening extending through its curved portion, a pin carrying portion, and a reversible pin in said portion.
