Description
(No Modell) W. A. INGALLS. Y SEPARABLE BUTTON.
No. 596,163. Patented Deo. 28,1897.
attozumj NITED STATES WILLARDYA. INGALLS, OF SOUTH BEND, WASHINGTON, ASSIGNOR OF HALF TO THEODORE PEARSON, OF SAME PLACE.
ATENT OFFICE.
ONE-
SEPARABL BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,163, dated December 28, 1897.
{Application led July 8, 1897. Serial No. 643,824. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLARDYA. INcALLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of Pacific and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons;Y
and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention r'elatesto a novel form of separable button, and more particularly to that class of j ewelry-buttons intended for collars, cuffs, and the like; and the object is to provide a simple and efficient button of this class. A v
To this end the invention consists in the construction, combination, andarrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure l is a perspective view, partly in section, of my improved separable button with the parts assembled. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the back and head separated. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the hollow shank 2. V
l represents the back of the button, and 2 the integral hollow cylindrical shank, which is formed with an internal flange 3, and 4 represents a longitudinal radial tooth or rib fixed to the inner wall of the shank 2 contiguous to the flange 3.
5 represents the button-head, and itis provided with a solid stem 6, terminating in a conical point 7, from which an integral springpawl 8 extends divergingly from the stem 6. The free end of the pawl 8 terminates in a tooth 9, which is adapted to engage the flange 3 in the hollow shank 2 to hold the head in place in said shank. The conical end 7 of the stem 6 snugly fits a correspondinglyformed recess 10 in the shank 2, which serves to hold the solid stem 6 in place in said shank.
The rib 4 is preferably V-shaped in crosssection, so that the spring-tooth 9 may ride upon either of its inclined sides to carry it out of the path of the flange 3 and thereby release it from the backportion l when it is desired to separate the button.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not de` sire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new and useful, and desire toI secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-
A separable button comprising the back having thevintegral tubular stem formed at its lower end with a` conical seat and at its upper end with an inwardly-projecting continuous annular flange, andwith an internal rib provided with inclined sides, and a head Witnesses:
S. H. EICHNER, J. A. MILLER.
