EMRY DAVIS, OF NEV YORK, N. Y.
PENHOLDER ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 596,057, dated December 28, 1897.
Application liled June 1, 189 7. Serial No. 638,992. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMRY DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful V Improvements in Penholder Attachments, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to'penholders; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to be connected with a desk, table, or similar article of furniture and which may be connected with an inkstand, if desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in both views, and in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a part of a desk or table provided with my improved penholder, and Fig. 2 a section thereof on the line 2 2.
The chief object of this invention is to provide a holder for pen-stocks and pens when they are not in use, so as to prevent them from being thrown down on a desk or table, and thus soiling or staining such articles of furniture, and in the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at 5 a part of a desk or table; and in the practice of my invention I provide a holder for the purpose herein speciiied, which consists of a conical attachment 6, the base of which is directed upwardly and which is provided at the lower end thereof with a tubular extension 7,which is preferably screw-threaded, and at the upper end of said tubular extension said attachment is preferably provided with an annular flange or rim 8, and the opening through the hollow conical attachment 6 is so formed that a narrow inwardly-directed shoulder or projection 9 is provided at the upper end of the tubular extension 7.
The inner Walls of the conical attachment 6 are preferably convex in longitudinal section, as shown at l0, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof.
In practice the pen-stock, with the pen connected therewith, is inserted 0r dropped into the holder, as shown in Fig. 2, and the form of the inner walls of the holder and the annular inwardly-directed shoulder or projection 9 are such that they operate to hold the pen-stock and pen as shown, the annular inwardly directed shoulder or projection 10 acting upon the pen so as to prevent the penstock and pen from tipping out or dropping out of the holder.
This device is simple in construction and operation and is perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and my improved attachment or holder may be made of any desired material, hard rubber being preferred.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A holder for pen-stocks and pens, consisting of an attachment which is adapted to be secured to a desk, table or other support, said attachment comprising a hollow conical portion the base of which is directed upwardly, and which is provided at its lower end with a cylindrical extension, and at the top of said cylindrical extension with an inwardly-directed annular shoulder or projection, substantially as shown and described.
2. A holder for pen-stocks and pens consisting of an attachment which is adapted to be secured to a desk, table or other support, said attachment comprising a hollow conical portion the base of which is directed npwardly, and which is provided at its lower end with a cylindrical extension, and at the top of said cylindrical extension with an inwardly-directed annular shoulder or projection, and also with an outwardly directed flange or rim, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I cla-im the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 25th day of May, 1897.
EMRY DAVIS.
