NITED STATES HAMILTON ROGERS, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO STEPHEN MACK AND MYRTIE ROGERS, OE SAME PLACE.
THREAD AND NEEDLE CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming pari-of Letters Patent No. 470,850, dated March 15, 1892.
Application tiled August 7, 1891. Serial No. 402,012. (No model.)
' 15 more fully described and claimed, and as illustrated on the sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure I is a side elevation of the case complete. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the spindle removed, showing two spools of twist zo. and a thimble thereon. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the spindle with the spools and thimble removed and looking slightly from the under side, so as to show the wax. Fig. 4l is a considerably enlarged central vertical .z 5 section of all the parts assembled.
Referring to the said drawings, the letter C designates a casing, which may be of any suitable size and material, but is preferably between two and three inches in length and 3o about an inch in diameter, and has a cover O', removably closing its open Aupper end. Vithin this casing may be located buttons B and a spindle I. The said spindle comprises a hollow shank H, adapted to contain needles N, and having corks K closing its ends to prevent the loss of the needles, an enlarged ring R, which is recessed on its lower face, so
as to contain waX W, and which has incisions or cuts r in its sides, and a conicalor tapered 44o upper end t, upon whicha thim'ble T maybe removably seated, and which, when in place, will cover the upper cork.
S S designate spools of twist in the present case, although it might be a single' spool of 45 thread, and such spools are slipped onto the hollow shank H and passed upwardly against the wax cup or ring R. The whole is of a size to be passed into the casing and of a length to permit a few buttonsB to be located 5o in the bottom of said casing.
The device forms a convenient and handy receptacle for buttons, thread, needles, wax,
and the thimble. vWhen desired to use the same, the cover O is removed and the contents poured out. The thimble is taken off the tapered portion, one cork taken out, and the proper needle selected, the points of the needles being preferably stuck into this cork, so that they will loe withdrawn therewith. The thread or twist may be drawn from the 6o spool or spools with or without removing the latter from the hollow shank, and when it is desired to waX the thread the latter is drawn through one of the cuts or incisions r in the v wax-cup. 65
This device will be found handy and serviceable, the articles needed are within small compass and can be readily found when wanted, and the entire device can be stored in a drawer or in a valise, as when traveling. 7o I do not limit myself to the proportions of parts nor to the materials, and considerable change in the details of construction may be indulged in without departing from the essential principle of my invention.
l/Vhat is claimed as new isl. In a device of the character described, a spindle comprising a shank of a size to iit the bore of a spool, and an enlarged ring on the shank near one end having a recess in 8o the sideA facing toward the other end, the sides of said ring being provided with incisions, each and all as and'for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device of the character described,
a spindle comprising a shank of a size to iit the bore of a spool, and an enlarged vring thereon near one end and having a wax-holding recess in the side facing toward the other end, as and for the purpose set forth. 9o
3. In a device of the character described, a spindle comprising ashank of a size to fit the bore of a spool, the shank being tubular, corks in the ends thereof, and an enlarged ring on the shank near one end having a recess in the side facing toward the other end, the outer wall of said ring being provided with an incision, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that l claim the foregoing as roo my own I have hereto afxed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
