FRANK B. MILLER, OF UNION VILLE, CONNECTICUT.
SCREW-DRIVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 595,859, dated December 21, 1897.
Application fllecl September 7,1897. $eria1 No. 650,885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANKB. MILLER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Unionville, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Screw- Drivers, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing, wherein the figure is a side view.
The object of the improvement is the production of a screw-driver which can be made to engage and hold a screw preparatory either to inserting or withdrawing the same.
In the accompanying drawing the letter a denotes two leaves adapted at the ends to engage a screw-slot, as illustrated in the drawing, by outward movement of the ends of said leaves. They are attached to and preferably are a part of the sleeve 6. The letter 0 de notes a shaft bearing a-handle 01, upon which shaft said sleeve is hung in such fashion as to permit the shaft to slide between the two leaves. The longitudinal play of the shaft with reference to said sleeve is limited by the spur e, projecting laterally from the shaft and confined within the mortise f, made in said sleeve.
shaft moves forward in its relation to said leaves it opens those leaves or presses them apart-this for the purpose of making the ends of the leaves engage the screw-slot, so as to support and hold the screw, the ends of the leaves being shaped and adapted for such engagement.
In using this device one grasps it by the handle and manipulates the sleeve 1) and leaves a by the pressure of the thumb acting against the action of the spring g.
. I claim as my improvement The two leaves adapted at the ends to engage a screw-slot and elastically pressing to 45 ward each other in combination with the bevel-edged shaft adapted to slide between the two leaves and with the spring adapted to press said shaft forward, all substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
FRANK B. MILLER. Witnesses:
JOHN MCMAHON, FRED E. STEDMAN.
