To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVAN M. WALoRoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gilchrist, in the county of Mackinac, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to whichit appertains to make and use 'the same.
This inventioin relates to improvements in wrenches.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a wrench which may be readily and quickly adjusted to fit objects of difierent sizes.
Another object of the invention is toprovide a wrench which includes a fixed and a movable jaw, and a means for further minutely adjusting'the jaws upon the object whereby a firm grip upon the object may be obtained. 7
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of the character described in which a means of novel construction for locking the movable jaw in adjusted position or for releasing said jaw is provided.
A still further object of the inventionis to provide a wrench of the character described composed of a relatively few number of parts, which is therefore simple in construction and is cheapto manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing fromthe spirit orsacrition.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wrench constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is a front view thereof, Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the wrench, the cover plate being removed, parts thereof being shown insection, Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 4 -4 of Fig. 1, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the lever.

Referring to the drawings, the invention comprises a fixed jaw A and a movable jaw B. The fixed jaw A is formed with an in= tegral hollow shank 5 consisting of a bottom 6, side walls 7 and 7 and a removable cover 8. The shank terminates below the cover 8 in a hollow handle 9. The side wall 7 extends from the jaw A and terminates in spaced relation to the handle 9. The jaw A is formed with a longitudinal opening 10 which registers with the hollowsof shank 5 and handle 9. The movable jaw B in cludes a shank 11 which is slidably mounted in the opening 10 of the fixed jaw A and extends through the shank 5 into the handlev 9 and has sliding'engagement with the side walls 7 of said shank 5. The edge of the shank 11 opposite the side walls 7 is formed with a series of transverse teeth 12. Formed in the lower end of the shank 11 is a longi tudinal slot 13 through which a transverse pin 14 extends, said pin being carried by the handle 9 and serves to limit the movements of said movable jaw B with respect to the movable jaw A.
Loosely mounted between the bottom 6 and cover 8 and between the side walls 7 and the handle 9 is a dog 15 which is formed on its inner face with a series of transverse teeth 16 for engagement with the teeth 12 of the movable jaw B. This dog is formed with a shank 17 which extends outwardly between the side walls 7 and the shank 11. The width of this shank issufiicient to permit of the dog 15 having a slight movement away from the shank 11. The lower end of the dog 15 is formed with an outwardly inclined end 18 which isengagedby the free end of a fiat spring 19,- the other end 20 of said spring being fixedly connectedto the shank 5 adjacent the handle 9. This spring serves to yieldably holdthe dog 15 in engagement with the teeth 12 of the shank 11, and thereby lock the movable jaw B from outward movement. Extending clownwardly from the outer face of the lower end of the dog 15 is a finger 21, and this finger is engaged by the free end 22 of a finger lever 23 which is fulcrumed intermediate its ends upon a pin 24 carried by the bottom 6 of the shank 5, the other end 25 of said lever constituting a finger-piece. Upon pressure upon the finger-piece 25 in a direction toward the shank 11, the dog 15 will be forced outwardly from engagement with the teeth 12 of said shank 11, thereby permitting the movable jaw B to be adjusted in any desired position. The upper end of the shank 17 of the dog 15 projects intofa pocket 26 formed in the fixed jaw A. The side faces of the jaw A are formed with angular openings 27-27 which register with the pocket 26, and disposed in these openings is a cam element 28. This element is mounted in said openings for sliding movements and is formed with an inclined underface 29 which engages with a corresponding inclined end 30 of the shank 17 of said dog 15. The sides of the shank 17 adjacent the inclined end 30 are recessed as shown at 3131 and are adapted to be alternately engaged by projections 32-32 which extend from the ends of the inclined underface 29 of the cam element 28, and thereby limit the sliding movement of said element. This element is of a length greater than the thickness of the shank 5 so that this element may be readily engaged by the operator when desired.
In practice, when it is desired to adjust the movable jaw B with respect to the fixed jaw A, the finger piece 25 of the lever 23 is depressed, and as above described,the dog 15 will be disengaged from the shank 11 of the movable jaw B. The movable jaw B is then adjusted to its proper position with respect to an object, and the spring 19 will return the dog 15 so as to cause the teeth 16 thereof to engage the teeth 12 of the shank 11, and thereby lock the movable jaw against inward movement. In order to further minutely adjust the jaws A and B upon an object, the cam element 28 is pressed in by the operator, and as a result, the cam face 29 of said element will engage the inclined end 30 of the dog 15, and as a, result, will cause said dog to be moved inwardly toward the handle 9, said dog of course carrying with it the movable jaw B. After the operation has been completed, the camelement 28 is returned to its normal position so as to be in readiness for the next operation.
What is claimed is:
1. In a wrench, the combination with a fixed jaw and a hollow shank, of a movable jaw having a shank operating in said hollow shank, said fixed jaw being formed with a pocket, a dog loosely; mounted in the hollow shank and having adjustable engagement with the second mentioned shank, a shank extending upwardly from the dog and into the pocket of the fixed jaw, the end of the last mentioned shank being inclined, and aecam element slidably mounted in the fixed jaw for engagement with the inclined end I low shank and having adjustable engage-- ment with the second mentioned shank, a shank extending upwardly from thedog and into the pocket of the fixed jaw, the end of the last mentioned shank being inclined, said fixed jaw being formed with openings registering with the pocket, and a cam element slidably mounted in theopenings of V the fixed jaw for engagement with the inclined end of the last mentioned cam for shifting the dog away from the fixed jaw to draw the movable jaw toward said fixed 1 3. In a wrench, the combination with a fixed jaw and a hollow shank, of a'movable jaw having a shank operating in said hollow shank, said fixed jaw being formed with a pocket, a dog loosely mounted in the hollow shank and having adjustable engagement with the second mentioned shank, a shank extending upwardly from the dog and into the pocket of the fixed jaw, the end of the last mentioned shank being inclined, a cam element slidably mounted in the fixed jaw for engagement with the inclined end of the last mentioned shank for shifting the dog away from the fixed jaw to draw the movable jaw toward said fixed jaw, and projections extending downwardly from the ends of the element for engagement with the last mentioned shank to limit the movement of said element. 7
