No. 596,226. Patented De0..7, 1897.

FRANK A. \VARDWELL, OF METHUEN, MASSACHUSETTS.
LOOIVI PlCKIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,226, dated December '7, 1897. Application filed July '7, 1897. Serial No. 643,750. (No model.)
To rtZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK A. WARDWELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Met-linen, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Loom-Pickers, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in loom-pickers, and it is carried out as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the invention. Fig. 2 represents a top plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 represents a longitudinal section on the line 3 3, shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a front elevation. Fig. 5 represents a vertical section 011 the line 5 5, shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 represents a detail perspective view of the picker.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawings. 7
A represents the loom picker-staff as usual, which is adapted to receive the metal loop or binderB, which is preferably secured to said staff bymeans of a screw 0. (Shown in Fig. 3.)
In one piece with the loop or binder B is preferably made the perforated picker-holding ring B, in which is retained the picker or filling D, preferably made of leather or other suitable material.
If so desired, the picker-holding ring 13 may be dispensed with; but in practice I prefer to use it in connection with said metal loop or binder B, as shown in the drawings.
The picker or filling D is preferably made cylindrical or oval to fit the correspondinglyshaped picker-holdin g ring B and is provided with an upwardly-pro j ectin g shank D, adapted to fit the interior of the front portion of the loop or binder B, as shown.
For the purpose of preventing the filling D from coming to pieces, breaking apart, or working out of the ring 13 by successive blows against the shuttle and to hold its parts together and locked within the said ring 13, as well as to increase its wearing capacity, I inclose said filling within a covering E, preferably made of rawhide; but, if so desired, it
may be made of any suitable textile, fibrous, or flexible material without departing from the essence of my invention.
In practice I provide the lower portion of the filling D with a downwardly-extending projection D, adapted to be held in place against the pickenstaif by means of the lower portion of the ring 13, as shown, and by such arrangement the filling is caused to be firmly held in place relative to the picker-staff and loop or binder, as shown.
The fillingD is preferably provided with a projection D extending outwardly beyond the ring B, so as to prevent the loop or binder or its ring from coming in contact with the shuttle end during the weaving operation.
That I wishto secure by Letters Patent and claim is- 1. In a loom-picker, the combination with a picker-staff, of a metallic loop or binder adapted to be secured to the pickenstaif and comprising the body portion B, and integral open-ring portion B, a filling arranged within said loop and ring and a portion thereof projecting out through the said open ring beyond the face'thereof, and a flexible covering inclosing the said filling and retained in position within the loop or hinder, substantially as described.
2. In a loom-picker, the combination with a picker-staff, of a metallic loop or binder adapted to be secured to the staff and comprising the body portion B, and integral openring portion B, a filling arranged within said loop and ring and having a lower projection D", upon which the said ring rests when in position, a part of the said filling projecting out through the said open ring beyond the face thereof, and a rawhide covering inclosing the said filling, and all retained in position within the loop or binder.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, on this 22d day of June, A. D. 1897.
FRANK A. W ARDIVELL.
