UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
FREDERICK K. IVRIGHT, OF ROCHESTER, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE STEAM GAUGE AND LANTERN COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
LOOM-SHUTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 403,979, dated May 28, 1889.
Application filed March 26, 1888. Serial No. 268,476. (No model.)
To all whom, t may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK K. WEIQHT, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loom Shuttles, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to that class of shuttles which are used principally in the manufacture of wire-cloth, and which are operated positively by two carriers arranged on opposite sides of the loom and alternately receivin g and delivering the shuttle-as, for instance, in Letters Patent No. 299,610, granted to me June 8, 1884.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of the shuttle with reference to the reception of the bobbin and the delivery of the shuttle-Wire; and my invention consists of the improvements which will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved shuttle. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the shuttle, showing the .hinged gate raised. Fig. 4 is a vertical crosssection in line x, Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
A represents the body of the shuttle, provided at opposite ends with pointed arms a a.
B represents the locking-lever, arranged in a recess formed in the rear side of the body A and arms a d', and constructed in any suitable manner-for instance, as described and shown in my Letters Patent No. 373,423, dated November 15, 1887.
C represents the bobbin of elongated cylindrical form, and having its journals c c arranged in the longitudinal direction ot the shuttle.
d d represent half-bearings formed in the body of the shuttle at opposite ends of the opening D, in which the bobbin is arranged, and receiving the journals c c.
E represents a forwardly-projectng guideframe secured to the sl1uttle-body and composed of two converging arms, e e', having their outer ends connected by a short horizontal bar, e2, upon which are mounted two guide-rollers, f f.
g represents aspringcatch, of any suitable construction, secured to the inner side of the arm e..
H represents a movable gate, composed of two converging arms, h 7L', and a longitudinal connectingbar, h2, similar in form to the corresponding parts of the guide-frame E of the shut-tlc -body, and adapted to rest on said guide-frame, so as to confine the bobbin in the shuttle. The gate H is hinged to the shuttle-body by pivots '11, and its longitudinal piece h2 is provided with openings i', which it over the studs ofthe guide-rollers f when the gate is closed. The gate is provided on its upper side with a notch, j, in which the head of the spring-catch g engages when the gate is closed, thereby locking the latter on the frame E. The gate II is provided With recesses le 7c, which close over the journals of the bobbin and hold the latter in its proper position in the shuttle.
L represents a flat tension-spring, secured at its middle to the inner side of the rear portion of the shuttle-body and bearing with its ends against the flanges Z l of the bobbin.
M is a longitudinal bridge or depressed guard, formed on the under side of the shuttile-body underneath the bobbin, for the purpose of preventing the Warp Wires or threads from coming in contact with the under side of the bobbin, and N is a similar bridge formed on the upper side of the gate ll.
Upon unlocking the gate and raising the same thebobbin is easily inserted or removed and the bobbin Wire or thread placed between the guide-rollers ff. Vhen the bobbin has been placed in the shuttle, it is secured therein by simply closing the gate, which is locked by the spring-catch. The tension is the same in both directions of the movement of the shuttle, as the axis of the bobbin is arranged in the direction of this movement and the wire is fed out in either direction at the same point. The bobbin-wire is, therefore, not liable to be cut or broken, and light or Weak Wire can be successfully Woven by the use of this shuttle.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the shuttle-body having sockets for the bobbinhjournals and provided on its front side with a projecting horizontal guide-frame, E, of a movable gate IOO covering said guide-frame and attached to the shuttle-body by pivots arranged lengthwise of the shuttle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the shutt1e-body provided with sockets for the bobbin-journals and having a projecting guide-frame, E, provided with guide-rollers ff, of a movable gate covering said sockets and guide-rollers, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, With the shuttle-body provided with sockets for the bobbin-journals and having a guide-frame, E,of a movable gate attached to the shutt.1 e-body, a depressed guard, M, formed on the under side of the Shuttle-body, and a raised guard, N, formed 15 Y on the 'movable gate, substan tially as set forth. Vitn ess my hand this 19th day of March,
' F. K. WRIGHT. Witnesses:
