LANTERN.
No. 595,209. Patented Dec. 7, 1897. FIE-i- FIG. 2-
J I 00 y E I if l ril l H ,B
5% W/ 'yzafim U lTF JOHN J. ROACH, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
LANTERN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,209, dated December '7, 1897.
Application filed March 30, 1897.
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. ROACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte city, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lanterns, and has for its object to provide a cheap device of comparatively little weight which may be conveniently carried by means of a simple attachment upon an ordinary dinner-pail, such as is used by miners and other workmen.
My invention consists of the novel devices hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout the several views.
Figure 1 represents a front view of my lantern attachment as carried upon a dinnerpail. Fig. 2 is a view of the lantern and dinner-pail shown in Fig. 1, as seen from the right in said figure; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged central vertical section taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 1.
A represents the lantern attachment, and B represents the pail or bucket upon which the said lantern is carried.
The front A of the lantern is open and is fitted with a sheet of glass, isinglass, or other transparent material which fits in the vertical slideways a a and rests at its bottom in the horizontal slideway a". This sheet is adapted to be lifted vertically for any reasonsuch, for instance, as to light the lantern.
The sides of the lantern are provided at their rear edges with vertical longitudinal flanges a and a respectively. Upon one of these vertical flanges, such as a a wire 0, bent at its upper end to form a hook c and bent outward and downward at its lower end to form the stud c, is soldered or otherwise attached along its middle portion 0 to the said flange a This hook c and stud c are adapted to engage in small vertical sockets or sleeves b and Z), respectively, secured to Serial No. 680,006. (No model.)
the side of the pail B, as seen most clearly in Fig. 1. These hooks and sleeves form a hinge-joint which allows the body of the lantern to swing to or from the body of the pail. Upon the other flange a are formed two small vertical sleeves a and a a short distance apart, and a similar sleeve b is secured to the side of the pail in a position to fit in between the two sleeves d and a with its central opening in line with the central openings of both of said sleeves. A pin or key D, composed of a piece of wire having a straight body d and a bent top (1, is adapted to pass through said sleeves when in line, and to thus secure the swinging end or side of the lantern to the body of the pail, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2.
The top and bottom of the lantern are each made concave at the inner edge to conform to the curve of the body of the pail. The top is provided with a suitable chimney or smoke-outlet E, which is soldered to said top and which is surmounted by a hood or cap F. This hood or cap is attached to the chimney by means of aplurality of small vertical strips e, soldered or riveted to the parts.
In the center of the bottom of the lantern is formed a circular socket A adapted to receive a piece of candle when desired. An
in its under side, fits over the candle-socket A and rests upon the bottom of the interior of the lanternbody, as seen in Fig.3.
The oil-reservoir or lamp-body A is provided with an opening in its top, into which is fitted a hollow screw-plug II, provided with suitable tubes h for one or more wicks, or any other suitable form of burner may be used.
The lantern-body has no back, as seen in Fig. 3; but when in position upon a pail, as shown, the side of the pail forms the back wall of the lantern and also acts as a reflector, as will be obvious. In this way the lantern can be made much lighter in weight and much less expensive than if a back provided with a reflector was provided.
It will be obvious that my lantern attachment may be attached to any ordinary dinner-pail after its first having been provided with the three small sleeves Z), Z), and Z1 as herein described.
oil-reservoir I, having a socket or chamber I It Will also be seen that either a candle or oil may be used in the lantern, the oil-reservoir or lamp-body I being removable at will.
The pail is provided With a suitable bail or handle B for carrying the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination with the pail B having the sleeves or sockets Z) and b and the sleeve 12 secured to the sides thereof; of a lantern having an open front provided With a transparency therein, and being entirely open at the back; vertical side flanges-at the back thereof; a Wire soldered along one of said flanges and bent at its upper end to form a hook, and at its lower end to form a stud adapted to engage said sleeves b and b; a
pair of sleeves secured to the other of said flanges a short distance apart; and a Wire rod or key adapted to pass through said pair of sleeves and through said sleeve 19 on the pail, and thus hold the lantern firmly thereon, substantially as described.
2. The combination With the pail B having the sleeves or sockets b and b, and the sleeve the back thereof; hooks upon one of said flanges adapted to engage in said sleeves or sockets b and Z) and form a hinge-joint; apair of sleeves upon the other flange a short distance apart, and a wire rod or key adapted to pass through said pair of sleeves and through said sleeve 12 on the pail, and thus lock the lantern-body thereto; a candle-socket mounted upon the floor of said lantern, and an oilreservoir having a socket or chamber in its under side adapted to fit over said candlesocket, resting in the lower part of the said lantern, and provided With a suitable burner, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
JOHN J. ROACI'I.
