No. 594,931. Patented Dec. 7, 1897.
INVENTOH Jar/am ATTOHAIEYJ'.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
LEVI H. BIGELOW, OF FREMONT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO OF SAME PLACE.
BOLT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,931, dated December '7, 1897.
Application filed May 7, 1897.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEVI I-I. BIGELOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of N ewaygo and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fastening devices for use in looking doors, windows, gates, and for other and similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- I Figure 1 is a front view of a part of a door and the frame thereof, showing my improved lock-bolt in connection therewith; and Fig. 2, a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in said drawings I have shown at 5 a part of one side of a door-frame and at 6 a part of a door, and in the practice of my invention I secure to or connect with the door in any desired manner a plate 7, which is provided with a longitudinal tubular casing 8, in which is mounted a locking-bolt 9, and the tubular casing 8 is provided with a longitudinal slot 10, at each end of which is an angular extension 11, and the bolt 9 is provided at one side With a pin 12, which is provided with a knob or head 13, all these features of construction being well known. I also secure to or connect with the frame of the door, in any desired manner and at the inner side thereof, a plate 14, which is provided with a longitudinal bearing 15, through which the endof the bolt9 is adapted to pass, and said bolt is provided adjacent to the outer end thereof with a semicircular notch or recess 16, and the opposite side of the frame of the door is provided with a plate 17, and passed through the frame of the door and through the plate 17 at the outer side thereof and the plate 14 at the inner side Serial No. 635,486. (No model.)
thereof and through the bearing 15 is a shaft or bolt 18, which is provided at each end with a flattened knob or head 19, and that end of the shaft or bolt 18 which passes through the keeper 15 is provided at one side thereof with a semicircular notch or recess 20. As thus constructed it will be seen that the shaft or bolt 18 may be turned so as to lock the bolt 9 in the keeper 15, and said shaft or bolt 18 may also be turned so that the bolt 9 maybe withdrawn from said keeper, and the bolt 9 may be turned in the tubular casing 8 by means of the knob or head 13, as will be readily understood, and the shaft or bolt 18 may be turned by the knob or head 19 ateach end thereof.
The form of the knobs or heads 19 at the ends of the shaft or bolt 18 is such that the position of said knobs or heads will indicate the position of the shaft or bolt 18 and also whether or not said shaft or bolt 18 and the locking-bolt are locked in connection, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
It will also be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein de scribed may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages and that my improvement may be applied to gates, windows, and other articles of this class as well as doors.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A look for use in connection with doors, gates and for other purposes, said lock consisting of a plate which is provided with a longitudinal tub ular casing in which is mounted a longitudinally-movable locking-bolt, in one end of which is formed a semicircular notch or recess, another plate which is provided with a longitudinal keeper which is adapted to receive said locking-bolt, and a shaft or bolt which is passed through said last-named plate, and said keeper at right angles to the locking-bolt, said shaft or bolt being also provided adjacent to one end thereof, with a semicircular notch or recess, substantially as shown and described.
2. Alock for use in connection with doors, gates and for other purposes, said lock consisting of a plate which is provided with a longitudinal tubular casin g in which is mounted a longitudinally-movable locking-bolt, in one end of which is formed a semicircular notch or recess, another plate which is provided with a longitudinal keeper which is adapted to receive said locking-bolt, and a shaft or bolt which is passed through said last-named plate, and said keeper at right angles to the locking-bolt, said shaft or bolt being also provided adjacent to one end thereof, with a LEVI I-I. BIGELOXV.
