HASP-LOCK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,849, dated December 11, 1883. Application filed September 3, 1883. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ERNEST R. MIOHAELIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sycamore, in the county of WVyandot and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hasp-Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention has relation to improvements in hasp-locks; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the same, whereby the hasp may be locked to the staple or fastened by means of a pivoted hook, all of which will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the claims appended.

The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of my de vice, showing the lock-case in section. Fig. 2 is also a front view with the lock-casing re moved, and Fig. 3 is also a front view.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the hasp, the rear end of which is provided with a perforation, a, to receive the staple b on the door or gate 0, by means of which the hasp is secured at its rear end to said door. The hasp is constructed at its forward end with an enlarged portion, (1, in which are two slots, 6 f, which register with the staple g on the doorframe or gate-post, as the case may be. Near the upper slot, 0, is pivoted a hook, h, which engages the staple y when the latter projects through said slot, and serves to secure the hasp thereto when it is not desired to lock the hasp. Bindicates a casing that contains the locking mechanism, which is bolted to the hasp, and covers the lower slot, f, and the front plate of which is provided with a key-hole for the insertion of a key to raise the locking-bolt i from engage- -ment with the staple y when it is desired to unlock the hasp from said staple. The locking-bolt is self-acting when the hasp is forced over the staple, and the former, when locked, can be released from the latter only by means of a key inserted in the key-hole of the lookcasing.

It will be observed by the above description and by reference to the drawings that when it is desired to use the hasp without looking the I same the upper slot is to receive the staple,

and the hook serves to fasten the hasp and staple to one another; but when desired to lock the hasp thereto, said staple is passed through the lower slot and engages the springbolt of the locking mechanism in the lockingcase, which secures and locks the hasp to the staple, and the two parts cannot be separated from one another except by the key operating upon the spring-bolt within the casing aforesaid, and when the samethat is, the hasp is locked to the staple, the latter, as well as the slot through which it passes, is entirely hidden from View, and therefore cannot be tampered with; at the same time it is durable, cheap to manufacture, and can be applied to grain-car doors, freight-cars, or, in fact, to anything where the common hasp is now used.

I am aware that prior to my invention hasps have been constructed with double slots for securing same to staples by locking and hooking, and I do not claim such a hasp, broadly; but

Ilaving described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s 4 1. In a hasp-lock, the hasp A, provided with the upper slot, e, and the lower slot, f, and having the pivoted hook h, the lower slot provided with a covering or casing containing the lockingbolt, whereby the hasp may be used with or without looking it by changing the slots to receive the staple, the whole operating as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.

2. As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described hasp consisting of the metal plate A, having the enlargement d, and provided with the slots 6 and f, arranged one above the other, the upper provided with T- shaped hook h, and the lower with the locking-case B, containing suitable locking mechanism, whereby said hasp is secured in either position to a single staple.
