Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH BROWNING, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
PIPE-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,775, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed January 11, 1897. Serial No. 618,690. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH BROWNING, of the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Pipe-Wrenches, of. which the following is specification.
My invention relates to pipe-wrenches; and
it consists of the improvements which are set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of pipewrenches which employ a movable grippingwheel which acts upon the pipe with a gripping action, and my improvements relate particularly to the construction of the gripping wheel, whereby its gripping action is increased and the tendency to cause the pipe to travel or move longitudinally is avoided.
My improvements are more particularly described in connection with the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of a pipe-wrench embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side-view of the same with part of the handle broken away. Fig. 3 is a sectional View on the line 00 a; of Fig. 2.
A is the body of the wrench, having the usual gripping -jaw a at the front and the handle B.
C is a movable carriage embracing the body Aand movable thereon. A spring D, acting on the carriage O, presses it forward. I have shown the carriage provided with an angular extension 0, projecting rearwardly into a longitudinal recess bin the handle and guided upon a longitudinal rod E, arranged in the recess. The spring D is shown encircling the rod E and bearing against the angular extension 0.
J ournaled in arms f of the carriage O is the gripping-wheel F, between which and the jaw a the pipe is gripped. The body Ais recessed longitudinally, as at d, to receive the wheel F. Carried by the wheel F are pinions I, engaging racks J J on the body A and traveling thereon.
So far as the wrench has been described the particular features of construction are not material to my invention, which relates particularly to the construction of the gripping-wheel F. It is usual to roughen or knurl the periphery of the gripping-wheel, so that it will properly grip the pipe. An effective gripping action is not obtained when the periphery of the wheel is roughened by straight transverse grooves, because the line of contact is alternately on the point of a straight transverse rib and on the groove between two ribs, so that the action is not uniform. When the periphery is grooved diagonally, the line of contact is always upon the points of the ribs, but the diagonal arrangement of the grooves tends to impart to the pipe a longitudinal movement. To avoid these defects, I provide the periphery of the wheel with V- shaped grooves, so that the tendency of one set of diagonal ribs to move the pipe in one direction counteracts that of the other set and at the same time the line of gripping action is always upon the points of the ribs.
In my preferred construction I form the wheel F in two parts or disks G G, provided with oppositely-disposed diagonal grooves, which when the two disks are placed together form a series of V-shaped grooves. These disks are shown so arranged that the points of the V-shaped grooves'are directed on the upper side of the wheel away from the gripping-jaw a. I have shown the disks G Geach integral with its corresponding pinion I and carried on a pin H in the arms f f.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
A pipe-wrench having a movable grippingwheel composed of parts having their peripheries provided with oppositely-directed diagonal grooves.
In testimony of which invention I have hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH BROWVNING. Witnesses: J W. KENWORTHY, ERNEST HOWARD HUNTER.
