(No Model.)
- G. T. MGUORKILE.
FORK. No. 594,644, Patented Nov. 30, 1897;
WITNESSES g, A //v VENTOI? wj %m x@ w AM ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
GEORGE T. MOCORKILE, OF MUNHALL, PENNSYLVANIA.
FORK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,644, dated November 30, 1897.
Application filed April 14, 1897. Serial No. 632,186. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. MoOORKILE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Munhall, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improved Fork and Platform, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in forks, and has for its object to construct a device whereby heavy objects may be handled by means of a traveling crane with comparative ease.
The invention further aims to construct a device of the above-referred-to class which will be strong, durable, effectual in its operation, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in View the invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein like figures of reference indicate similar parts throughout the several views, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fork. Fig. 2 is a view in perspective. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the platform, 2 the riser, and 3 the span.
4 is the hanger, having an eye 5.
The platforms 1 1 are held rigidly together by a brace or stay 6, provided with a socket 7 to receive a handle to guide the fork. Secured-to the risers at 8 8 are bridges 9 9, provided with supports 10. Said bridge is provided with a hook or an eye 11 to engage a rope or chain 12, and the eye 5 engages a rope or chain 13, secured to an operating-drum.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a fork having a modified platform. The platform is provided with a depressed portion 14 to receive a round or square object, said depression preventing the object from sliding off.
The operation is as follows: The hoistingrope 13 is wound on an operating-drum, and one end is secured in eye 5 of the fork, which is raised and lowered by said rope. To the eye or hook 11 is secured a rope or chain adapted to lift the fork, which can be accomplished in either of two ways. The rope 12 may be secured to a drum, and when it is desired todump the load the rope 11 is elevated, or the rope 11 may be stationary and the hoisting-rope 13 lowered, and in that manner the load may be dumped.
It will also be noted that the reach is just one-half the length of the platform, which insures the platform remaining horizontal.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a fork consisting of a platform, a riser formed integral therewith, a span formed integral with said riser, and provided with a hanger, braces securing the-arms of said platform together, said braces provided with a socket to receive a handle, a hook to receive dumping means, and strengthening means carried, by said riser, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a fork, suspending means secured to said fork, a platform, risers provided with strengtheningmeans, a dumping mechanism secured to said strengthening means, braces securing the forks of the platform together, and provided with means for guiding the fork, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a fork, a platform, a riser carrying said platform, strengthening means secured to said riser, and engaging a dumping-rope, means for guiding said fork, and means for operating the fork, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE T. MCGORKILE.
