PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. SMITH, OF KRUG, MARYLAND.
CONVEYING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 745,253, dated November 24, 1903. Application filed January 21, 1903- Serial No. 139,922. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: Be it known that I, GEORGE W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Krug, in the county of Garrett and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Conveying Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art 1o to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in conveyors, and particularly to logging apparatus, and has for its object to provide a con- I 5 veyer which is simple and cheap in construction and effective in operation. these purposes by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the apparatus is shown in operative position.
In the drawing, A represents the franie work of an ordinary hoisting device, at the front end of which is secured a derrick B, made of strong material, having suitable dimensions and secured at C. The member E forms aboom or support for the derrick, which is further supported by the. guy-ropes M. The derrick has a pivotal connection at its base with the hoist'to permit of its free ad'- justment back and forth. The boom likewise is pivotally secured to the derrick. By this arrangement the height of the head-sheave may be altered at will by a forward or backward movement of the boom, and in moving the machinery the boom may be folded upon 3 5 the derrick and the whole laid back upon the hoist. Upon the derrick is affixed the headsheave G and upon any suitable object, as H, issecured the tail-sheave II. A cable I, wound upon the drum D, is passed through 40 the sheave G and from there through the tailsheave II, whence it passes back toward the head-sheave and is secured to a carriage J at j. The head-rope, which is wound upon the drum D, is passed through the head-sheave G and secured to the carriage at j, and to I accomplish the carriage J is attached at Z any suitable tongs L.
In operation the rope is paid off from the drum D and, if necessary, fromD also to permit of the carriage being taken to any desired point for the purpose of securing the load to be conveyed. As the rope I passes below the upper pulleys of the carriage the said carriage is thereby supported, and when the rope is paid 0% from D and taken up by D the load is conveyed toward the hoist. hen the operation of the ropes is reversed, the load may be carried in the opposite direction.
It will be seen, therefore, that a cheap and effective mechanism is thus formed whereby heavy loads may be quickly and easily conveyed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A conveying apparatus comprising a hoist, a derrick pivotally supported upon the end thereof, and having a boom pivotally secured thereto, a head-sheave at the top of said derrick, a tail-sheave mounted on a suitable support, a carriage, a tail-rope passing from said hoist through said head and tail sheaves and supporting midway thereof said carriage, and secured atits end to the carriage; and a head-rope secured to the carriage and to the hoist, substantially as specified.
2. In a conveying apparatus, a hoist, a derrick pivotally mounted thereon, a boom for supporting the derrick in any desired position, a sheave connected to said derrick and a rope from the hoist passing through the sheave for operating a carriage, substantially as specified. Y
In testimony whereof I affix my signature -85 in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. SMITH.
