TRIP-ISLING.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,135, dated June 7, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM MARTIN GAIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carlton, in the county of Carlton and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trip-Slings; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to trip-slings adapted for use with hoisting apparatuses, and especially for hoisting logs, and has for its object the provision of a sling comprising a limited slip-noose adapted to be easily parted to release the load.

With these and other objects in view it consists of the constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1- is a portion of a hoisting apparatus, showing my invention in operative position. Fig. 2 is a portion of a hoisting apparatus, showing my invention in inoperative position.

In the drawings, 1 is a portion of a hoistingderrick provided with a sheave 2, over which is rove a hoisting-cable 3, which cable is preferably provided intermediate of its ends with a ring 4. To said ring is secured the upper ends of crotch-line portions 5 and 6, respectively, each of which latter portions is provided with a stop-ring 7, secured thereto at a considerable distance from its lower end, and each of which said portions 5 and 6 is also provided at its lower end with a terminal ring 8. Upon each of the portions 5 and 6, above the stop-ring 7, is slidably secured, by means of a ring 9, a short cable or coupling-chain 10, provided at its free end with a snatch-hook 11, to the heel of which hook is secured one end of a trip-line 12. p

In operation the ring 9 can never pass below the ring 7 and no time is therefore lost in finding the terminals of the cables 5 and 6, such as would frequently be the case if the ring 9 could slip down to the ring 8. When it is desired to hoist one or more logs, the free end of the portion 5 is carried toward one end Serial No. 168,586. (No modelfi of the load and the free end of the portion 6 -is carried toward the opposite end of the load.

The portions 5 and 6 are then passed under opposite ends of the load and their terminal rings engaged with the hooks 11, carried by the respective chains 10, which latter chains are passed over the load before said hooks 11 and said rings 10 are engaged together. A limited slip-noose is thus formed at each end ofthe load. As soon as the load touches its new bed the trip-lines 12 are operated, preferably by hand, to disengage said hooks 11 from said rings 8, thus releasing the load.- I/Vhile I have described crotch-line portions for said cable, I do not desire to limit my claims to a construction embodying crotchline portions, as it is evident that where only short articles are to be lifted said ring 4 and either said portion 5 or 6 may be omitted and the remaining portion 5 or 6 made continuous with said portion 3 of said cable without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.

It will be observed that I have produced a sling of great efliciency and simplicity, such as can be easily and cheaply constructed with the very limited facilities found in lumbercamps and which can be rapidly and easily operated. It is obvious that within the scope of my invention chains or wire or rope cables may be used as equivalents.

Having now described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

'1. In a trip-sling, the combination with a hoisting-cable, having crotch-line portions and provided at each of thefree ends of said crotch-line portions with terminal rings, of stop-rings secured to said crotch-line portions intermediate of their ends, coupling-chains slidably secured to said crotch-line portions above said stop-rings and provided at their free ends with hooks adapted to engage the terminal rings at the free ends of said crotchline portions and trip-lines secured to said hooks,respectively, substantially as described.

2. In a trip-sling, the combination with the hoisting-cable provided at its free end with a .terminal ring, of a stop-ring secured to said cable near its free end, a coupling-chain slidably attached to said hoisting-cable above said stop-ring and provided With a terminal hook adapted in operation to engage said terminal ring, and a trip-line secured at one end to the heel of said hook, substantially as described.

3. In a trip-sling, the combination With a hoisting-cable provided With a stop near its free end, coupling means slidably secured to said cable above said stop, and means for engaging the free end of said cable With said coupling means, substantially as described. 7 In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
