FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,324, dated November 23, 1897.

Application filed October 2, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK OHILDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wolf Creek, in the county of Williamson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to a novel construction in a wire fence; and it consists of the features of construction hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a panel of a fence constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.

In said drawings, .1 indicates the strands of Wire, 2 the posts, and 3 the auxiliary posts.

The said posts 2 are secured at the lower end in blocks or bases 4, of stone or masonry, and consist of upright bars 5, riveted together at intervals. The strands of wire are situated between the bars 5, as shown, and are suitably clamped between the same to form a rigid structure. Between each pair of the posts 2 are the auxiliary posts 3, which are shorter and are about one-half the length of the posts 2. These auxiliary posts 3 are made in the same manner as the posts 2 and are preferably driven into the ground. These short auxiliary posts are employed since the strands of wire at the bottom of the fence are closer together and are subjected to more Serial No. 607,668- (No model.)

wear, and therefore need a stronger support. A fence constructed in this manner is not only inexpensive, but can be put together by people without any special knowledge of fence-building, since all the parts can be bought without being specially prepared and made into the necessary sizes and shapes as found necessary.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A fence-panel consisting of posts 2, each of said posts comprising two upright bars having smooth and straight inner faces and between which the fence-wires are situated and clamped, said bars being fastened together at intervals by rivets, a base or foundation for said upright bars and in which said bars are embedded, and a short auxiliary post 3 situated between each pair of posts 2, said auxiliary post consisting of two upright bars having smooth and straight inner faces fastened together and between which the fence-wires are situated and clamped, said bars being fastened together at intervals by rivets, and said auxiliary post supporting only the lower strands of the wire forming said fence-panel.
