UNITED STATES PATENT EEICE,
JEAN ALBERT RAMBAUD, OF PARIS, FRANCE,I ASSIGNOR rIO THE OOM- PAGNIE INTERNATIONALE DES PROCEDES ADOLPI-IE SEIGLE, OF
SAME PLACE.
APPARATUS FOR LIGHTING AND HEATING BY MEANS 0F HYDROCARBONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 594,282, dated November 23, 1897.
i Application iiled April 19, 1897. Serial No. 632,792. (No model.)
To all whom t v1 0/tay concern:
Beit known that I, J EAN ALBERT RAMBAUD, a citizen of France, residing at Paris, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Lighting and Heating byMeans of Hydrocarbons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has relation to an apparatus for the gasification or vaporization of light or heavy hydrocarbons for the purpose of utilizing said hydrocarbons in lighting or heating, and in such connection it relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of the apparatus. i
My invention consists of a double-Walled retort comprising a series of intercommunieating sections spaced or separated from each other to provide communications between the interior chamber of the retort and the exterior atmosphere through said spaces between the sections, and each section being provided between its walls with partitions so arranged as to cause the oil or vapor therein to follow a circuitous route through the retort.
My invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in whichy Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the retort embodying main features of my invention, together with a sideelevational view of the sprayer and heating-nozzle, the inner wall or casing of one of the sections of the retort being broken away to show the partitions between the walls of the retort; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings, the retort consists of a series of sections B, communicating with each other. Each section is doublewalled, and the space between the interior and exterior walls is divided up or separated by partitions Gr to form a circuitons or serpentine passage for the hydrocarbon oil or vapor passing through the retort. The sections B are separated or spaced, as at B', to permit of the entrance through said spaces B of air from the exterior of the retort to the interior chamber or liue B2 of the retort. The spaces between the walls of the sections B communicate with those of contiguous sections by means of the inlets or openings B3. Below the lower section of the retort is located an ignition-cup A, in which an easilyinflammable oil is placed and ignited, so that in burning to heat the interior wall of the retort the flame and heat pass through the iiue B2 of the retort, the air entering through the spaces B serving to render the combustion of the flame in the iiue more perfect. The
heat thus created speedily brings 'the retort to a temperature necessary to vaporize the hydrocarbon in the retort, said hydrocarbon being fed to the retort through the inlet H from any suitable source. The vapor produced in the retort passes out by the pipe D to a sprayer J of ordinary construction. From the pipe D extends a pipe E, leading to a nozzle or burner F, which forms the permanent heater for the retort. Between the outlet-pipe D and the retort is preferably interposed a chamber or box I, which may be filled with a iiltering material (not shown) to retain impurities which may be carried by the vapor. The sprayer J is preferably fed by a branch pipe K, controlled by a valve O, with vapor from the pipe D and also by the pipe L with air or steam to pulverize the vapor. The iiame M, issuing from the sprayer J, passes through an ignition apparatus P,
which, as shown, consists of two contracted tubes, the inner one being of metal and the outer vone of metal lined with refractory material, and the two tubes are separated by an air space or channel.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an apparatus of the character described, a double-walled retort, comprising a series of intercommunicating sections spaced or separated from each other to provide passages for the entrance of air to the interior chamber or In testimony whereof I ztfIX my signature flue of the retort from the exterior atmos in presence of two Witnesses.
phere through said spaces and each section beinOp provided with partitions arranffed ber1 Y tweel its walls to form it ereuitous fassage JEAN ALBERl RAMLAUD through the retort of the oil o1' Vapor therein, VVtneSses:
substantially as and for the purposes de- EDWARD P. MACLEAN,
scribed. PAUL DE BIESTRAL.
