N5 Model.)-
- A. O. HANEY.
DOUBLE ACTING PUMP.
No. 593,936. Patented Nov 16, 1897 UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ALLEN OTIS HANEY', OF MILFORD, INDIANA.
DOUBLE-ACTING ,PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,936, dated. November 16, 1897.
Application filed April 26, 1897.
4 To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLEN OTIS HANEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milford, in the county of Kosciusko'and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Pumps;- and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to double-actingforcepumps; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by which I secure important advantages with respect to efficiency in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of a double-acting pump constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the pump-cylinder, and 2 the headsthereof. At each end of the cylinder are inlet-passages 3, which extend inwardly from said ends and communicate with valvechambers 4 at each end of a cylindrical valvechest 5, provided with an inlet-pipe 6, which communicates'with said chest between the valve-chambers. These valve-chambers are formed with screw-threaded openings 7, with which. engage removable cylindrical screwcaps 8, while the inner ends of said chambers are formed with openings 9, in which are seated laterally-movable valves 10 10. The stems 12 of these valves work in cylindrical recesses in the caps 8,formed with shoulders 13. Coiled springs 14, encircling said valves, are interposed between the same and the said shoulders.
The numeral 15 designates a central outletopening in the upper side of the pump-cylinder, connected with which is an outlet-pipe 16. Located in said cylinder are two pistons 17 17, each consisting of a circular plate or disk formed with a central annular screwthreaded flange 19, which forms a seat for the Serial No. 633,967. (No model.)
valves 23 23, provided with stems 24: and With wings or guides 25, which work in said flanges. Secured to said flanges are caps 20, consisting of circular plates or disks provided with arms 21, with which is connected or formed integral therewith a tube 18, in the ends of which the valve-stems 24. work. Located in this tube is a coiled spring 18 which bears against the ends of the said stems.
The numeral 22 designates a packing-ring interposed between the pistons and caps.
Passing through one of the cylinder-heads and connected with a suitable motor (not shown) is a piston-rod 26, the inner end of which is secured to arms 26, secured to or formed integral with piston 17 Formed in bosses 27 at opposite sides of the outlet-opening are valve-openings 28, the inner ends of which are enlarged and form seats for the inwardly-opening valves 29 29 provided with stems 29*, provided with heads 29. Coiled springs 29 are interposed between said heads and the bosses which serve to close the valves.
The operation is as follows: When the pistons are in the position shown in Fig. 2 and i are set in operation by the piston-rod, the valve 23 in piston 17, williclose and the inletvalve 10 will open and water will be drawn into the cylinder through the valve-opening 9. At the same time air-valve 29 will open and valve l0 will close and valve 23 will open. Upon the reverse movement valve 1O will open and valve 23 close. During this reverse movement valve 23 will open and valve 10 close and water will enter the cylinder through piston 17 and at the same time air-valve 29 will open, admitting air into the cylinder. As the pistons reciprocate the water and air willbe forced out through the outlet-pipe.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim is- 1. In a double-acting pump, the combination with the pistons comprising the circular plates or'disks, formed with annular screwthreaded flanges on the inner sides or faces, and wing-valves, provided with stems, of the caps consisting of the circular screw-threaded plates engaging with said flanges, the connecting-tube and coiled spring and the packing-rings, substantially as described.
2. In a double-acting pump, the combination with the cylinder, having inlet-openings at the ends, and a central outlet, the valveopenings at opposite sides of said central outlet, the valves, the headed valve-stems and the coiled springs, of the pistons consisting of circular plates or disks, having central openings and screw-threaded annular flanges, the wing-valves seated in said openings, and provided with stems, the circular caps secured to said flanges, the arms connected therewith, the tube connected with said arms, the coiled spring, and the piston-rod connected with one of said pistons, substantially as described.
3. In a double-acting pump, the combination with the cylinder, having end inlet-openings and a central outlet, the bosses formed in the cylinder at opposite sides of said outlet having valvefiopenin gs therein and the air- 20 valves seated in said openings, of the circular pistons, having central openings and annular screw-threaded flanges, the screw-caps connected therewith, the packing-rings, the arms connected with said cap, the connectingtube, the Wing-valves seated in the openings in the pistons, the stems thereof working in the ends of the tube, the coiled spring in said tube, the arms secured to or formed with one of said pistons, and the piston-rod secured thereto, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ALLEN OTIS HANEY.
