SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,879, dated November 16, 1897.

To all wiz/'0m it may concern/f Be it known that I, NAPOLEON DU BRUL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and Stateof Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar or Cigarette Wrapper Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My inventionv appertains to that class of cigar or cigarette wrapper cutters which employ a cutting-die .upon which the leafv is spread and an open or channeled die-block through which air-suction is developed to rel tain the leaf in place and smooth condition over the cu tting-die, while a suitable pressure device is passed over the cutting-die above the leaf to cut out the wrapper. I have found in practice that fewer air channels or openings than heretofore provided .may be employed without impairing the holding force, while theV construction is thereby materially cheapened and simplified and' the drying out of the tobacco-leaf wrapper is prevented, so that the latter is left in better condition to roll upon the bunch.
My present invention, which involves theabove features of advantage, consists, primarily, of a die-block formed of a suitable number of sections or parts spaced apart so as to leave proper air-channels between them and means for holding said parts or sections in Ass their proper relative positions.
My invention further consists in a novel form of cutting-die for use in connection with such a die-block. I have disclosed two methods for thus holding the parts or sections in proper relative positions, and others might be provided. According to one-method the parts or sections are held together by a longitudinal bolt or equivalent device, while washers on said bolt are interposed between the parts or sections to space them the proper distance apart and leave straight unobstructed air-passages between them. According to another method the parts or sections of the block are secured toa plate orbase, upon which they are suitably spaced apart,.so as to leave vertical channels or air-passages. If the plate is at the bottom and forms a base-plate, as preferred, the air-suction is communicated to the channels laterally above the base-plate. My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical section illustrating the general type of machinesto which my present invention is applied and showing one form of my improved die-block. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section of the said die-block with its yielding support and surrounding cutting-die and air-chamber. Figs. 3 and 4 are respectively a perspective view and a transverse section of the same form of dieblock. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of 'a modified form of die-block and a novel construction of cutting-die adapted thereto, together with the surrounding air-chamber. Fig. 6 is an enlarged perspective of the form of die-block andcutting-die shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6, but showing a modification in the cutting-die.
To illustrate the application of my present invention, I have shown in Fig. l the ordinary table 1,having a raised platen 2, in which is mounted the cutting-die 3, with surrounding air-chamber 4, also a swinging arm 5, which carries a roller 6 to apply cutting pressure to the cutting-die 3, and a pipe 7, establishing communication between the air-chamber 4 and any suitabe air-exhauster 8.
My invention relates to the construction of the die-block 9, which is supported yieldingly within the cutting-die 3 by means of springs 10, surrounding the rods 11, and which has heretofore had its surface practically covered withvperforations, channels, grooves, or other form of air-passages through which suction is transmitted'from the surface. According to my present invention I make up this dieblock 9 of sect-ions 9, (see Figs. 2, 3, 6, and 7,) of which there may be any suitable number and which are spaced apart substantially as shown, so as to leave unobstructed channels extend to the edge of the die-block surface of the block and remains in good convertical channels 12 between them. VThese and offer ample suction-passages to hold the ICO dition for rolling. The sections 9 may be held in their proper relation, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and et, by a rod 13, passing longitudinally through said sections and through washers 1i, which space said sections apart, but which are of such diameter as to avoid choking the space between them and the cutting-die, or said sections 9 may be effectively secured together in proper relation, as illustrated in Figs. 5, G, and 7, by mounting them upon a base-plate 15 with proper spaces between them to form the channels 12. This gives the unobstructed vertical channel down to the base-plate, whence the escape of air must be lateral. To provide for this lateral escape, the cutting-die may be formed with lateral openings 16 opposite the channels 12, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, or with recesses 1Gn in the lower edges of the cutting-dies, as shown in Fig. 7. By making the supporting die-block in this manner I gain not only the advantages heretofore named, but the additional advantage of eheapness, inasmuch as these sections can be cast and put together very cheaply with minimum expenditure of labor.
Some of the features which I have herein disclosed for purpose of illustration will be recognized as forming the subject-matter of claims in my copcnding application, Serial No. 621,513. Hence l do not abandon such features by failure to claim them here.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what l claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combina-tion, with a closely-itting cutting-die; of a dic-block for wrapper-cutters consisting of a series of sections presenting broad flat imperforate surfaces for the support of the tobacco-leaf during the cutting operation, and spaced apart so as to leave channels between the sections through which the air is exhausted; substantially as described.
i. A wrapper-cutter comprising a cuttingdie, an air-chamber surrounding the cuttingdie, and a die-block consisting of a series of sections presenting broad fiat imperforate surfaces for the support of the tobacco-leaf during the cutting operation and spaced apart so as to leave channels between the sections through which the air is exhausted; substantially as described.
3. The combination,withacutting-die; ofa die-block for wrapper-cutters consisting of a series of sections presenting broad flat imperforate surfaces for the support of the tobaccoleaf during the cutting operation, and means extending the length of the die-block whereby the sections are secured together in proper relation so as to leave channels between the sections through which the air is exhausted; substantially as described.

The combination, with a cutting-die; of a die-block for wrapper-cutters consisting of a series of sections presenting broad flat imperforate surfaces for the support of the tobacco-leaf duringthe cutting operation, having spaces between them so as to leave channels between the sections through which the air is exhausted and a base-plate on which the sections are mounted; substantially as described.
5. In a wrapper-cutter, the combination of the supporting die-block formed of sections secured together with spaces between them, and a cutting-die having lateral openings in the wall thereof for the escape of air from said spaces, as herein explained.
G. In a wrapper-cutter, the combination of a supporting die-block formed of sections, mounted upon a base-plate with spaces between them, and a surrounding cutting-die provided with openings corresponding with the spaces between the block-sections, sub stantially as and for the purposes set forth.
