IMPROVEMENT lN MACHINES FOR SHEARlNG AND BOOKING TOBACCO.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 137,170, dated March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, INGHAM W. Brsmne, of the city of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, and J oHN'S. MOOUNE, of Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New J ersey, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Shearing and Booking Tobacco- Leaves, of which the following is a specification:
Our invention, in the first place, relates to the combination of two rolls, having a small middle portion of metal for rolling down the tobacco-stems and the remainder of the rolls outside of the same, faced with rubber, or equivalent material, for passing the thin portion of the leaves forward and spreading them out simultaneously with the rolling down and flattening of the stems. In the second place the invention relates to the combination, with the rolls, of a pair of shears for cutting off portions of the stalk which adhere to the stems.
By the use of our machine the stems are utilized, thus saving a considerable amount of stock. There is also a great saving of time, as the stock is in much better condition for the workman than when otherwise prepared. Another advantage results from the fact that the tobacco can be worked much wetter than usual, the rolling tending to dry the leaves.
Figure l is afront elevation of the machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical section at the dotted line a b of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one of the rolls B.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts. 7
A A are the ends of the standing-frame. B B are the rolls on the shafts O and 0. They. have a small annular portion, a, of metal for rolling down the tobacco stem s. The end portions of the rolls are faced with Indiarubber or other equivalent material b. The latter parts spread out the leaves each side of the stem simultaneously with the flattening and rolling down of the stems to the same thickness as the leaves or nearly so.
of the wheel D 011 the shaft 0 there is a wheel, D which gears into the wheel D on the driving-shaft E.
Power may be communicated to the drivingshaft by means of the treadles F F, or from a motive power by means of a belt passing over the fly-Wheel G. If desired, a crank may be used in connection with one of the rollershafts.
H is a table upon which the tobacco-leaves are placed for passing them through the rolls. I I are plates which guide the leaves from the opposite side of the rolls to prevent them curling around the same. They serve, also, as scrapers for cleaning the rolls.
At one end of the machine there is a pair of shears, J J, for cutting hit any portions of the stalk which may remain in connection with the stems. The shear J has a permanent connection with the contiguous end A of the frame. The other shear is connected by means of the connecting-rods K K with the crank L at one end of the driving-shaft E.
The standing shear J has two cutting-edges, so that the shearing may be performed in both the up and down motions of the movable shear J 5 but it may have only one cutting-edge, if desired.
Instead of the shears J J circular shears may be used attached to one end of the rollershafts O C.
It will be seen that any number of machines may be in connection on a line by the ext-emsion of the shafts O G.
We claim as our invention 1. The combination of the yielding-rolls B B, having a middle portion, a, of metal, for rolling down the tobacco stems, substantially in the manner above described.
2. The combination of the shears J and J with the rolls B B, for shearing 0% from the stems any remaining portions of the stalks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
INGHAM W. BISBING. JOHN S. MOOUNE.
