JOHN H. SNYDER, OF RIQHMOND, VIRGINIA.
.MACHINE FOR ROLLING HORSESHOE-BLANK BARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 349,182, dated September 14, 1886.
Application filed June 1], 185 .6.
Senial No. 204,854. (No model.)
To all whom, it mar concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SNYDER, of
Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Rolling Horseshoe-Blanks, of which the following isa specification.
My invention relates to machines for rolling horseshoe'blanks, and is an improvement on the machine for which Letters Patent No. 194,934 were granted to me September-4, 1877.
The present invention consistsin certain features of construction and combinations of parts whereby the heel portions of the shoe are upset or narrowed and thickened, as desired, and in other improvements, as will be pointed out.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of same. Fig. 3 represents in detail the upper roll. Fig. 4 represents in detail the lower roll or hearing. Fig. 5 represents in detail the side roll, all of which will be described; and Fig. 6 shows the blank after treatment by my machine. I
The base A and. housings B Z) are suitably formed to support the several parts of the improvement. In the housings B b, I j ournal shafts O and D, which shafts are. by preference suitably geared to revolve together, as shown. On
the upper shaft, 0, just outside of housings B,
I form or fix a collar or flange, E, and the shaft On the extension e, I place the upper roll, F,which is provided with dies f, adapted to form in the blank the creases and indentations for the nail heads and holes, substantially as described in myformer patent. These dies are preferably formed separate from the roll and secured thereto. This may be effected by forming cavities or recesses in the body of the roll and fitting and securing the dies therein. A collar, G, is fitted on the extension cup against the upper roll, and bolts 9 are passed through said collar and roll and into the collar E, thereby securing the roll F in place. The lower roll, H, is fitted onto the end of shaft D, and removably secured thereto, as shown, so it maybe readily renewed when worn. This roll forms a back-bearing for the upper roll and the side roll, and preferably has the pinion d formedintegralwith it. The rim of this roll is shaped in step form with the faces 1,2, and 3. The facelis arranged in line below the collar G. the face 2 in line below the roll F, and the side 4.,connecting faces 2 and 3, forms the back wall ofa blankway 5, of which the upper and lower rolls form, respectively, the top and bottom.
The vertical shaft I is journaled at its lower end in the base A and at its upper end in an overlapping frame, a. This shaft, as shown, is in a common vertical plane with the shafts O and D, as is most clearly shown in Fig. 2. On this shaft is fixed a pinion, t, which meshes with the pinion d, by which means motion is given to shaft I, as is desired. The side roll, J, is also fixed on the shaft I, and is arranged to form a side of the way 5. This roll is formed with a circular beveled face or edge, J, on its periphery, which gives a bevel finish to the thick or other edge of the blank, as will be readily understood, and the roll is also provided with dicsj, which are preferablyinserted in recesses in the roll and project out beyond the same, as shown. upset the blank at proper intervals, and narrowand thicken the same at the parts which form when the blank is cut into lengths the heels of the shoes.
. In the construction shown the shanks of dies j are fitted into recesses in the under side of the body of the roll, and, being suitably secured, are braced by the pinion t, which fits snugly up against the under side of the side roll, as shown in Fig. 1.
The collar G, which forms practicallya part of the upper roll, bears against the upper surface of the side rolls at the edge of same, and the face 1 of the lower roll in turn bears against the lower surface ofsuch roll, and these parts G 1 serve to brace and give rigidity to the side roll, as will be readily seen.
Where desired the upper roll may be provided with dies 6, for forming indentations 7 in the surface of the blank, to indicate where the same should be out.
It will be noticed that when the machine is given motion and a bar is fed into way 5, the upper roll serves to crease and indent same at proper intervals, and the side roll thickens it up at the heel portions to form the desired These dies are fitted to I OL) blank. By arranging the rolls, side and top, to act at the same point, I avoid any drawing between the said rolls, as in my former patent, so there can be no variation in the relative location of thickened and creased portions of the blank incident to a variation in the drawing action, as is experienced in the use of machines constructed according to my former patent aforesaid.
It will be noticed that the back-pressure in the upsetting ot' the blank .is borne against the side or edge 4, and through the same by the shaft D. To preserve the proper relation of the several rolls, I provide the shalt D with a disk, K, which bears alongside ot' a disk. L, on shaft 0. so that in case the shalt D should be pushed back any by the upsetting ol' the blank the shat't C will be correspondiugly moved back, and the relation of the several rolls will be preserved.
Heretofore machines for rolling horseshoeblanks have been constructed with two dierolls on horizontal shafts and one dieroll on a vertical shatt co-operating therewith, such die-rolls being constructed to mold and crease the bar and to thicken and upset the blank at its heel portion, and I do not broadly claim such construction as my invention; but,
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In amachinetorrollinghorseshoe-blanks,
the combination. with the shaft 0, provided with a roll, the shaft D, having a roll arranged to receive the side pressure in upsetting the blank. and the side roll, of the disks K and L, secured one on. each of the shal'ts O and 1'). whereby the relation of the rolls on said shat'ts may be preserved, substantially as set forth.
2. In amachinet'orrollinghorseshoe-blanks, having upper and lower rolls supported on hm izontal shat'ts, the side roll, J, having a beveled face or flange, J, and provided with dies for upsetting the blanks, substantially as set forth.
3. In a machine substantially as described, the combination, with the upper roll, F, a collar, G, arranged laterally to the said roll F, and the side roll, 01' the lower roll havingt'accs 1 and 2 and a side or bearing edge, 4, all constructed and arranged substantially as set fortllf JOHN H. SNYDER.
