'cH-ARLES L. rirznnen, or `Prrrsinme, PENNSYLVANIA.
desea December 20, 1870.
IMlROVEMENT IN ROLLS FOR FORMING HORSE-SHOE BLAKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making par't of the same.l
To auwhom it' may concern i" Be it known that I, CHARLES L. FITZHUGH, of Pittsburg, Allegheny county, State of Pennsylvania, fhave' invented a certain improvement in Rolls for forming Horse-Shoe Blanks; and I do hereby declare ,y thefollowing to be a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof to enable one lskilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use it, V'reference being had to the accompanying drawing making .part of this specification.v
i Nature and Objects of Invention.
Y 1 `yMy invention is an improvement upon the horseshoe rolls patented by lVilliam lV. Lewis, Februaryl, '1859, reissued March 30, 1868, and consists in the provision in the said rolls of cutting-oil1 knives, which, i'n connection with the devices embodied in the LettersPatent of lV.' \V.'Lewis, will completely prepare General Description.
s 4f The rolls A B are jonrnaled in the customary way, inv bearings fitted to the housings O D, and are n -geared together by spur-wheels E F; The rolls are Y Y.coupled to the motive-power in any of the known ways used in rolling-mills. '.lhelower roll B is formed with a groove, I1, which, at the points a a', is of the required size and shape of "the'heels of the blank, its other portions being formed with bevel projections b', having curved ends, as shown.
horse-shoe blanks for the bending-machine, and thus e when the rolls are in operation, form the peculiarly-shaped bevel necessary :for the inside of the shoe when bent.
The roll A is constructedl with projecting c1 easingtongues a', which are designed to form the nail@ creases in the blank, and these creasers, af", have serrated edges, as shown, by which the nail-holes are partially punched.
In addition to the construction of the rolls with groove-creasers and bevelers, all of which is found in the Letters Patent of lVilliam W. Lewis,.ai`oresaid, I provide the roll lA with two knives', lo" a, which are in such a position with relation to the roll B that t'heywvill cnt' the bar in the spaces a tu',
This provision of the knives notouly serves to separate the iron into blanks of uniform length, but gives oblique ends to the blanks, which facilitates the formation of the heel-calks.
The knives a" can be connected to the body of the roll A by any preferred method.
as shown, it is obvious that the crcasei-s, bevelers, and knives may be in either the uppcror lower roll, or one or more of' them in either roll, at will, and that the rolls can be constructed to f'orm one, two, or more blanks at one revolution, according to the size of -roll preferred and length of blank desired.
Claim As an improvement on the machine patented as aforesaid to W. W. Lewis, the cutting-nii` knives a", inserted in the roll for the purpose of'cntting the rolled bar into suitable lengths for horse-shoe blanks whilelying within the groove of the roll, as set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hcreuntolset {n} hand.
CHAS. L. FITZHUGH.
Witnesses:
J As. E; MGKELVY, G. A. STEINER.
e Although' I prefer the arrangement of the devices.
