IMPRovED EXTENSION-TABLE.

Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,367, dated November 6, 1866.

To all whom it 'may concern.-

Be itknown that I, JOHN B. CURTIS, of Port Henry, in the county of Essex and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Extension-Table; and I do vhereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an inverted plan of the extension-table of my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section taken in the line a Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a top View. Fig. 5 is a partial section of a set of table-leaves, on an enlarged scale, showing their attachment to the table.

lhis invention relates to an improvement in extension-tables; and consists in arranging extension-leaves in sets, which are folded together within the frame of the table, so that they shall lie under and over each other when the table is closed, and are unfolded when the table is opened, the extension-leaves being thus connected with the table instead of being separate, as usual, and therefore more compact and convenient.

Fig. 1 represents the under side of a table when extended, with one set of extensionleaves, Al, unfolded and lying across the frame a a, between the two ends of the top or bedleaves A A, to he supported as usual on fourcorner legs, b b b b, and a central leg, o, fastened to a cross-piece, B, made stationary under the central sliding frame, a.

There are three sets of extension-leaves, Al, A2, A3, one set, A3, being twice the width of either of the other sets-or, in other words, extending longitudinally in the table a distance equal to both the other sets of extensionleaves, as shown in Fig. 2.

.The extension-leaves are cut in three sections, 1 2 3, transversely in relation to themselves, and longitudinally as regards the table when extended, as shown in Figs. l and 5; and the sections of the leaves are hinged together so that the outside daps, l and 3, fold above and below the center section, 2, when closed within the frame of the table, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.

The long set, A3, is hinged to a side piece, d. as shown in Fig. 5, which side piece, cl, is hinged to one side of the sliding frame a', that occupies a middle position in the table, and is supported by the cent-ral leg, c, as shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3. By means of the hinged side piece, d, the set A3 is folded down at the bottom of the frame, leaving a space between it and the top or main bed-leaves of the table for the other sets of extension-leaves to lie above it when they are folded and the table is closed, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The hinged piece d also allows the set A3 to rise to the level of the top of the table when it is extended and the leaves are unfolded, as shown in Fig. 3.

The smaller sets of eXtensionLleaves, A1 A2, are hinged to the upper edge of the sliding frames a2, so that when the table is extended and the sliding frames, to which they are'attached, respectively, are drawn out, the leaves can be unfolded and lie even with the top of the table, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4.

The table may be extended for one or more sets of leaves at a time, pins being provided to hold them in placewhen closed and to take out when they are opened. The edges of the extension-leaves are also supported, as usual, by (lowel pins; and, in addition, swinging arms may be attached to the sides of the frames to support the flaps or outside sections of the extension-leaves when the table is extended and they are-unfolded.

When the table is fully extended and the central set, A3, is unfolded, a cross bar is passed through the frame to support the outside sections.

Ha-ving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

Constructing an extension-table with ex tension-leaves made in sections and hinged together and also to sliding frames or draws for-folding together, and lying under 'thc top or bed leaves when the table is closed, and unfolding even with the top or bed leaves when the table is opened, arranged and operating substantially as herein described.
