Be it known that we, CHARLES W. POLLOOK and WILLIAM KURTH, citizens of the United States, residing at Casselton, in the county of Cass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lace Holders and Unwinders; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Our invention has for its object to provide a very simple and inexpensive device which can be used as a drawer-piece on which the lace, embroidery, or braid can be wound and which can be so held Within suitable guides to form a complete drawer-like body capable of closing up in such manner as to keep dust from entering and settling upon the lace or other articles secured therein.

Another and essential object of our invention is to provide a combined lace holder or Winder capable of being used as a drawer and having a handle member projected outward, which when the drawer is pulled from its guideways forms a shank to engage a socket in the top of the counter.

Another object of our invention is to provide a holder having a Winding portion revolubly held within the body portion, which in turn is adapted to slide onto suitable guideways.

Furthermore, our invention seeks to provide a lace-holder having a revoluble yholding member, and a body portion adapted to be slid onto suitable guides and having adjustable detents for securing the said holder from ro' tation and which are capable of being adjusted to form spring-stops to limit the force of ro-v tation of the holder, whereby the rotation of the same may be more readily controlled and the lace and other articles held thereon uniformly unwound.

With other objects in view, which will hereinafter'be referred to, our invention consists in a device for the purposes stated combining the peculiar combination and novel arrangement of parts, such as will be first described in detail and then be speciically pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a View showing our invention as applied for use. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improvement detached from drawerguides. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating more clearly the construction of the adjustable stop devices. Fig. 4 is a detail crosssection taken on the line 4 4. of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a transverse section taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, the drawer-guides being also shown.

In its practical construction our invention embodies a body portion A, the edges of which have grooves a, whereby such body can be readily made to slide on tongues b, secured to the upright or division boards B, which form the ways into which the holders are slid in a uniform manner, as clearly shown in Fig. l, by reference to which it will be seen the front ends d of the holders are made to engage each, so that they will iit closely and thereby prevent dirt entering between the meeting edges thereof.

The body portion- A of the holder is cut out so as to form the side portions into bifurcated arms a2, which form a sweepway, and between such arms the revolving blade or holder C is held to turn, which blade is hung on studpins D, secured in the upper end of the arms a2, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.

The blade C is made somewhat thinner than the body portion A, so that when the full quantity of lace or material is Wound thereon its thickness, with the lace, will not exceed the Ythickness of the said body to prevent an easy sliding of the several holders onto the guideways h. To admit of an easy winding of the material onto the blade, the ends thereof are cut away, as at C C, as shown clearlyin Fig. 2.

- The bottom a.' has a central outwardly-extending handle a, which when the holder is withdrawn from the guides B forms a'spindle or shank whereby the said holder can be held erect on the counter by inserting the same in anyone of a series of sockets or apertures f in the counter F, such member a3 forming, as it were, the double function of handle member for pulling the holder o its guides and a shank for holding it upright, so the lace can be readily unwound.

So far as described it will be readily seen that by pulling out the holder and setting it IOO in the position shown in Fig. l the blade or paddle holding the lace can be turned until the required amount of lace is unwound.

To prevent a too rapid rotation of the paddle or blade when a large quantity of the material is to be unwound and also to hold the said revoluble lace-holder from turning when the same is to be inserted into the drawerholders B, we provide adjustable detent devices which consist of spring-metal slotted slide-plates G G', which are each held in a depression a in the body A near the edge of one of its side arms, each of which has an upturned end g, which forms a linger-piece whereby the plate can beadj usted up or down. lVhen the holder is to be slid onto its guides, both plates G are moved up to the position shown in Fig. 8, whereby the blade is held locked from a swing movement, the plates being held to their adjusted position by the coil-springs I-I, the tension of which is adj usted by means of the thumb-screws I I', held on a shaft J common to both plates, as clearly shown in Fig. 4.

lVhen it is desired to provide a brake means to limit a too rapid revolution of the paddle, one of the plates G G' is moved down out of the path of the end c, while the other is projected up slightly above the path of movement of such end, it being obvious that as the plates are of spring metal the paddle while checked in its swift movement will slip over the projecting end of the spring slide-plate.

It is our practice to provide a number of holes or sockets in the counter and to arrange the drawer or guide members B so spaced apart as to take the widest and thickest holder at one end and gradually decrease the space between such members B to take the gradually-reduced sizes of holders, as clearly shown in Fig. l.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of our invention will, it is believed, be at once apparent to any one skilled in the art to which it appertains. The same is of an exceedingly simple and economical nature and when arranged as shown in Fig. l provides an attractive and convenient way for holding the lace or other articles free from dust and in a position forquick handling.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a device for the purpose stated, the combination with the partitions B having guides or tongues, and the counter having apertures in its tops, of a body member A having a forwardly-projecting handle adapted to fit the apertures in the counter, and grooves in its edges adapted to fit the partition-tongues l), and the paddle or blade held to revolve on the body member A, substantially as shown and described, whereby when the said blade is turned in a plane with the body, the blade device can be slid within the partitions B or supported with its handle engaging one of the apertures of the counter, substantially as shown and described.

2. The combination with the body portion A having a forwardly-projecting handle and rearwardly-extending bifurcated arms, and a blade held to turn between such arms, having projecting portions at the ends, said body portion having oppositely-disposed recesses, of the sliding plates and means for holding them to their adjusted position as specified.

3. The combination with the body having cut-out portion, and handle, and the revolving blade arranged as shown, said body having recesses at one edge, of the plates G G, the single bolt J, the springs II H', and the thumb-nuts all being arranged substantially as shown and described.

4:. The combination with the partitions B having tongues b, and the counter having apertures in its top of the body member A having a forwardly-projecting handle adapted to fit the apertures in the counter, and having bifurcated arms, and grooves in its edges, adapted to iit the tongues b, the paddle or blade held to revolve between the bifurcated arms, and adjustable detents for holding the blade for revolving, all being arranged substantially as shown and described.
