SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,854, dated November 2, 1897.

Application filed March 15, 1897.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES S. WHIPPLE, of Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Detachable Door-Fastenings, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention has for its object to improve and simplify the construction of detachable door-fasteners; and it consists in certain details of construction,which will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.

Figure 1 shows in plan view a detachable door -fastening embodying this invention; Fig, 2, a side view of the detachable door-fastening shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a crosssection of the door-fastening shown in Fig. 1, taken on the dotted line 1 1.

a represents a fiat strip of metal having one of its ends bent at substantially right angles to the main portion, as at a, and having secured to its opposite end a block ai through which a threaded hole is formed,-and adjacent said block the strip a is slotted for a considerable distance, as at a in line with said hole.

In using the device the right-angular end a, of the strip a will be inserted in a hole or slot in the jamb or frame of the door-as, for instance, in a hole in the striker-plate-and the strip a when set edgewise will occupy a position between the edge of the door and its frame, and the bent plate I) on said strip a Will be adjusted with its wings or lateralprojections 1) bearing one upon the door and the other upon its frame, and then by turning in the thumb-screw c said bent plate 17 will be moved along on. said strip a, and its wings or lateral projections bearing more firmly against said door and its frame will firmly clamp the device in position.

The bent plate I), it will be observed, may be detached from the strip a.

I claim I l The detachable door-fastening herein described consisting of the strip at having a rightangular portion a at one end, a block a at the opposite end and a slot a the bent plate bastriding and moving along on said strip a having lateral projections 19', b, and a thumbscrew 0 passing through said block and working in said slot a against said bent plate I).
