To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW S. TEATS, a'citizen of theUnited States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Garrett and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blackboards and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

There is usually connected to the ordinary blackboard used in schools a trough at the lower end provided for the purpose of holding chalk and the blackboard-erasers. After the same has been used for a considerable length of time this trough becomes filled with chalk-dust, and the erasers themselves are coated with the same, all of the dust erased from the board being collected in said trough.

In order to overcome the objections to the old form of chalk-holders and eraser-support, my invention was devised.

Said invention consists of a combined chalkreceptacle and eraser-holder adapted to be located at any convenient point adjacent to the blackboard, the same being preferably constructed of sheet metal with a trough projecting forwardly from one side thereof for holding the chalk, and the other part thereof being provided with. pointed projections or teeth adapted to receive the blackboarderaser itself.

The invention also consists in other details of construction and combinations of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a blackboard, showing a plurality of my combined chalk-holders and eraser-supports connected at convenient points adjacent thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of one of the supports. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the same on an enlarged scale.

Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the difierent views.

The blackboardl is of the usual form and construction and is illustrated herein merely to show the application of my invention thereto.

My improved chalk-holder and eraser-support is made of a plate 2, of sheet metal or other suitable material, adapted to be screwed or otherwise secured to the wall at any convenient point adjacent to the-blackboard 1. I prefer to locate them on each side of the blackboard or just above the same. Secured to the front side of the plate 2 is a trough 3, constituting the chalk-holder, the same being constructed of sheet metal having a rounded bottom 4, provided with a series of perforations 5 5 therein and with end pieces 6 6. Any particles of dust forming or collecting in said trough are permitted to be removed therefrom through the openings 5 5. Said trough occupies only a portion of the length of the plate 2, the other part thereof being formed with a series of pointed prongs or projections 7 7, as clearly shown. In the drawings Ihave illustrated these prongs as being stamped from theplate. I do not wish to confine myself, however, to this means of making said prongs, as any other equivalent means maybe substituted therefor. The pointed ends of the prongs extend upwardly and are adapted to receive the eraser, the said prongs penetrating the soft woolen surface thereof.

As thus constructed it will be seen that I have devised an extremely simple device for holding chalk and for supporting blackboarderasers which may be located at any convenient point adjacent to the blackboard, and does not receive all of the dust which is wiped from said board. Furthermore, the same being made separate and adapted to be sold as a separate article of manufacture as many as may be desired may be used in connection with a single blackboard, the means of applying and removing them being extremely simple.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A combined chalk holder and blackboard-eraser support, consisting of a plate having a trough on the front side thereof, occupying a portion of the lengthof said plate, and pointed prongs or teeth on the front surface of the remaining portion of said plate.

2. A combined chalk holder and blackboard-eraser support, consisting of a plate having a trough secured to the front surface thereof, provided with a rounded bottom piece with perforations therein and iinperforate end pieces, and pointed prongs or teeth formed upon the front of said plate.

3. A blackboard-eraser support, consisting of a plate of sheetnietal adapted to be secured at a suitable point adjacent to a blackboard, and provided with pointed teeth or projections 011 the front surface thereof, the said Y teeth being stamped from the metal of which 10 the plate is made.
