Be it known that I, PAsoHAL MALLETT, of the city of East St. Louis, St. Clair county, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps, of which th'e following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

My invention relates `to lamps, and especially to the means of supporting and adjusting lamps; and it consists of the novel construction,combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.

Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a lamp mounted to swing in a horizontal plane. Fig. 2 is a verticalsectional-view through the lower part of the lamp proper upon an enlarged scale, parts being broken away to economize space. Fig. 3 is a 'vertical sectional view through the top of the 0il-tank,showin g means of supporting the tank. Fig. 4 is an enlarged view in perspective of the shade and chimney holder shown in Fig. 1.

Referring to Fig. 1, the arm 38 has the vertically-alined bearings 39 formed integral with one of its ends, said bearings being designed to receive a pin to form a hinge connection between'said'arm and its support. At the free end of the arm 38 are the vertically-alined bearings40 and 41, formed integral with said arm, and the free end of said arm is constructed in such a shape that the spherical tank 42 may be mounted between said bearings 40 and 41. The block43 is fixed in the bottom of the tank 42 and extends downwardly therefrom, and the trunnion 44 is formed upon the lower end of said block 43 and operates in the bearing 40.

The pipe 45 is placed'in a horizontal position with one of its ends screw-seated in the block 43, and there is a passage through said block 43 leading from the opening in the pipe 45 to the interior of the tank 42. The brace 46 is attached to the pipe 45 and extends upwardly into vertical `alinement with the bearing 4l, and the pin` 47 is inserted through the bearing 48 in the upper end of said brace 46 and through the bearing 41, and said pin is screw-seated in the lug 49, fixed in the upper side of the tank 42. The brace 46 may be in the form of ornamental scrollwork, as shown, or of any desired form, and the arm 3S may be of an ornamental design, such as is shown, or of any suitable design, the only essential being a rigid connection between the bearings 39 and the bearings 40 and 41.

The lamp 5l is fixed to the free end of the pipe 45, as shown in detail in Fig. 2. The lamp consists of the cylindrical receptacle 52the lower end of which is lixed to the block 53, and the free end of the pipe 45 is screwseated in Said block 53. The passage 54 leads from the pipe 45 to the interior of the receptacle 52. 'The burner 55 is attached to the upper end of the receptacle 52, and the chimney :56 is supported by said burner. The tube 57 is'fixed to the pipe 45 in a vertical position and near the lamp 51, and the lower end of the rod 58 is adjustably mounted in the tube 57 by means of the set-,screw 59. The rod 58 extends upwardly to a point on a level with the upper part of the chimney 56, and then is-bent into a horizontal plane, and the portion 60 of said rod is formed into a circular loop, which loop encircles the neck of the shade 61, and the ends of said portion 60 forming said loop are removably hooked together. When it is desired to remove the shade from the shade-holder, said ends are disengaged.

.Y A collar 62 is fixed upon the rod 58 near the loop 60, and the rod 63 is attached to said collar and extends upwardly to a position above the upper end of the lamp-chimney 56, and the upper end of said rod 63-is bent into a horizontal position.

' A sheet-metal disk 64 is attached to the upper end of the rod 63 and in position directly above the opening in the upper endof the chimney, and the spring-arms 65 extend out- 'wardly and downwardly from said disk and engage the inner surface of the upper end of the chimney 56, as required to form a support for said chimney and hold it in engagement with the burner.

The trunnion 44, engaging in the bearing 40, and the pin 47, passing through the bear- IOO ings 41 and 48, form a hinge connection between the lamp and the arm 3S, and the bearings 39 form a hinge connection between the arln 3S and the support, which may be the wall of the room or any other suitable support, and thus is provided means for a wide range of adjustment in a horizontal plane for the lamp.

I claiml. In a device of the class described, a vertical tube, a rod adjustably mounted in said tube, the upper end of said rod being bent into a horizontal plane and into :L loop, the ends of which are removably hooked together, said loop being designed to engage the shade, :L second rod attached to the irst-inentioncd rod and having its upper end bent into a horizontal plane, :L disk attached to the free end of said second rod, and :Li-ins projecting outwardly and downwardly from said disk to engage the lamp-chimney, substantially as speciied.

In :L device of the class described, the arm 38, the vertieally-alined bearings 3f) formed integral with one of the ends of said arm SS, said bearings being designed to receive a pin to hinge said arm to its support, the vertically7` alined bearings 40 and 41 formed integral with the opposite end of said arm from the bearings 39, the spherical tank f 2 mounted be tween said bearings 40 and 4l, the block 43 iixed in the bottom of said tank and extending downwardly, the trunnion 44 formed upon the lower end of said block 43 and operating in the bearing 40, the pipe 45 having 011e of its ends screw-seated in said block 43, there being a passage through said block 43 leading from said pipe to the interior of said tank, the brace 4G attached to the pipe 45 and eXtending upwardly into vertical alinement with the bearing 4l, the pin 47 inserted through the upper end of the brace 4U, through the bearing 4l and screw-seated in the upper side of the tank 2, and a lamp fixed to the opposite end of the pipe 45 from the tank 42 and in horizontal alinement with said tank, substantially as speciiied.
