NATHAN F. GUTI-IRIE AND WILLIAM H. GUITE, OF TIE SIDING, WYOMING; SAID GUITE ASSIGNQR TO SAID GUTI'IRIE.
G ATE' FOR IRRIGATING=DITCHES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,649, dated October 26, 1897. Application filed February 13, 1897. Serial No. 623,223. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, NATHAN F. GUTHRIE and WILLIAM H. GUITE, citizens of the United full, clear, and exact description of the inven-- tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient gate for the laterals of irrigating-ditches in which the amount of water that passes into the same from the main ditch can be regulated or entirely cut off.
The invention consists more particularly in providing a gate or cut-off of improved construction whereby the same can be readily placed in position for use and as readily removed when desired.
The inventionfurther consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as hereinafter fully set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the general application of our improved gate or cut-off for irrigating-ditches. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the gate. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of same.
A gate constructed in accordance with our invention is preferably made up of sheet metal, the main part comprising a plate A of the configuration shown in the accompanying drawings and provided centrally with a segmental opening A. To one side of this plate are hinged or otherwise attached a pair of supporting legs or braces B B. We have shown these legs or braces as being hinged to the plate A; but it is obvious that they could be soldered directly thereto and, being of sheet metal, could be bent outward at an inclination for the purpose hereinafterstated.
To the opposite side of the plate A from the legs or braces B is secured a cross-bar O, the securing means passing through the ends of the bar, so that a plate or cut-off D can be slidbetween the plate A and said bar and be held in place thereby. This plate or cut-01f D is pivoted at one of its upper corners to an extension a of the plate A, the opposite end of said plate or cut-off being formed into a grasping-handle d. The plate or cut-off D is of a configuration to present an inclined edge d adjoining its pivot, which edge, in conjunction With a vertical series of indentations a in the plate A, serves to indicate the extent to which the plate or cut-off D is moved, and consequently the extent to which the opening A in the plate A is uncovered.
The device hereinbefore described is adapted to be placed across the laterals of irriga ting-ditches, being buried to a short depth in the bottom and sides thereof, while the legs or braces B are extended at an inclination, as
shown in Fig. l, and in this position the flow of water into the said laterals can be regulated by manipulating the plate or cut-off D.
This construction provides a very simple,
cheap, and effective device for the purpose set forth and saves a great deal of labor in the system of irrigation which prevails in Cali fornia and other sections of the country.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a gate for irrigating-ditches, a plate A having an opening A, supporting legs or braces 13 attached to one side of said plate, a cross-bar secured at its ends to the other side of said plate; together with a plate or cut-off D pivoted to the plate A and located between the cross-bar and said plate, substantially as shown and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination in a gate for irrigatingditches, of a plate A having an opening A therein and a series of indentations or marks a, a cross-bar C secured at its ends to one side of said plate, and a plate or cut-of]?
