W. A. LATTIMORE.
GAP.
Patented Oct. Z6, 1897.
ATTORNEY,
' UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
WALTER A. LATTI MORE, OF ST. OLAIR,PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE LATTIMORE MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CAP.
srncrrrcA'rron forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,298, dated October 26, 1897. Application filed Mara 20,1897. smart. 628,493. (to model.)
To all whom it may concern: I
- Be it known that I, WALTER A. LATTIMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Clair, in the county 'of'Schuylkill, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gaps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following speci-.
fication and accompanying drawings.
My invention-consists of a cap comprising a vizor having on its rear a curved flange rising therefrom, a side crown formed of a covering and a stiffening-band therefor, to which said flange is riveted, a top connected with said side crown, and spurs integral with said band, to which said covering is clenched.
It also consists of the combination, with the above, of a covered reinforce secured to the side crown and adapted to have the sweatlining stitched or otherwise attached to it.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a cap embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a vertical section of a portion thereof on line w m, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a vertical section of a portion of the side band.
Fig. 4 represents a section of a portion thereof on line 00 w, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a perspective view of a vizor embodying my invention. Fig. 6 represents a perspective view of the attaching-piece employed for the sweatlining. Fig. 7 represents a partial side elevation and partial longitudinal section of a rivet employed; Fig. 8 'represents a section of a portion "of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a cap the body of which consists of the vertical side or side crown'B, formed of a circular band of metal or other material, the cloth or fabric covering E, and the top D. The lower portion H of the covering is held tightly over said band B by means of the spurs O, which project from the latter and are integral therewith, they being clenche to the covering, as moreparticularly shown in Fig. 4.
F designates the vizor of the cap, the same consisting of the horizontal pieceNof metal with a beaded rim M,'within which latter is the wire G for stiffening'said bead.
Rising from the rear of the piecelN is the segmental flange Q, which is fitted within theinside of the corresponding portion of the body of the cap and secured thereto by the rivets R, which are also passed through the strip J, consisting of the piece of fabric L and the stiffening or reinforcing piece K therein, said strip affording means for stitching or otherwise securing the sweat-lining T in position, as at S, and covering the inner ends of the rivets. It will be seen that the vizor is light, strong, and durable, and the entire cap is correspondingly light, its rear being stiffened by the flange Q, turned uptherefrom, and its front and sides by the beaded rim M.
If desired, the flange Q may be secured'to thefront ofthe body, as in Fig. 8.
The metal preferred for the vizor and band is aluminium owing to its lightness and other advantages possessed by the same.
. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A cap comprising atop, aside crown consisting of a metal band and a covering therefor, and a metallic vizor having a curved flange integral therewith, said flange being riveted to said crown, and the latter being provided with spurs integral therewith to which said covering is clenched.
2'. A cap consisting of a top, a side crown formed of a band, and a covering therefor, a vizor having a curved flange which is riveted to said crown, and a covered reinforce to which said band is adapted to be secured, said reinforce being connected with said crown and flange.
