CAP
Filed April 8, 1929 KARL KLEIN Patented Nov. 10, 1931 U'NITED STATES PATE 1 KARL KLEIN, OF S'l. LOUIS, MISSOU'RI Application. fi1ed April s, 1923. Serial N0. 353,333.
One of the mainbbj ects 0f 1ny invention is to provide a cap Whi'ch may be easily and 'securely adjusted tq vary the head-size between the full range of sizes, and which Will have a, 'continuous sweat band within the cap 1 along the opening.
Anothep' object 0f my invention is to provide adjsting means f01 said ca'p, said adjusting nieans being in the form o f a, strap 1 extending about the Cap and forming the head-size defining opening, so t11atadditiona1 straps to define the head size a1e not required.
Mziny other objects and advantages 0f the -onstruction herein shown and described Will be obvious 130 those skilled in the art 130 Which this invention appertains, from the disclosureS herein given.
T0 this end, myinvention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combi nation of parts herein shown and described, -and more particularly pointecl 0ut in the claims.
In the drawings, whefein I 'haveillustrated the preferredembodiment of my imvention, like reference characters indicate 1ike 01 corresponding parts throughout tbe views.
Figure 1 is a perspective vievv 0f a cap em- 30 bodying my improvements, as seen from the front, and Wif;h the viz0r down;
F igure 2 is a cross-sectional view 0f the same, taken substantially along the 1ine 22 0f Fig. l;
Fignre 3 is a plan view of the cap, partia1ly in section, as viewed from the under side.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, A indicates the crown the-1eof, said crown being of substantially circular shape anc1 made in one piece 01' in anun1ber 0f segments as shown. The crown may be lined if desired, as at l. The crown is cut and shaped in the usual manner, und in the form shown is bulged out circumferentially.
A vizor 12, 0f generally arcuate shape, or crescent-shaped, is secured t0 the freut of the crown, the rear edge of the vizor being stitched o1 otherwise secured to the forwzud peripheral portion of the lower edge m:' the crown member, in the usual manner. Snap lowei* edge, t0 define the bead elements 3, one of which is secufed to the upper srface of the vizor, und the other to the under part 'of the croWn rnay be Usedtb keep the viz0r in lower6d er raised, position, asdesired. A sweat band 4, generally 0f leather, is SQ- cured to the inside of the cap at the lo-wer edge ther eof, said band being in one piec6 of material and extending continuously abont the low er 01' open portion of the bap, sz mid band being secured to the rear edgb 0f the vizot andthence extendin9; 1earwardly and secured t0 that portion 0f the lower edge of tbe crown member that is rearfivar'dly o f the V1ZOI'.
The upper or innermost edge 0f the sweat band may be 1eft freeflof securement therealong, 01' if desired, the Same may be stitched therealong to the cap lining l.
A narrow strip or strap 5, preferzibly of strong canvas .01 the 1ike, extends circumfefentially about the periphery of the cap, adjacent the head opening, said strip extending along t]ci e rear, sides and 0v'er a. portibn'of the front of the lower edge of said c10Wn member, and is preferably stitched or otherwise Secured therealong, as a t 9,saidl strip having its ends free Cf Secu1fern6nt to pr0vide .Any suitable faspening meang such as a buckle 7 maybe arrztnged between the'seh0- operatihg free ends of the strap so that said ends may be adjustably secured together.
;The strap 5 is prefer'ably cvered With th'e same material as that 0f the Crown, ab itsexab1y positionedextefiqrly of the .crown grder 130 more 'e.asily manipulate them, butthe remainder of the Strapmay be c0nceziled beneath the outer shown..
As the mbs am tightned together in the adjusting proeess, pleats 01% f01ds 8 2tre formed in the fro1'1tportionof the crown member, t-0
Posed 01' tab endsi. The taub ends a16pref3rripheral edge of the crown anem;ber as'close as possible to said peripheral edge f01' tho major portion thereof, as shown in the drawings, so as 130 fonn a reinforcement for t-he cap therealong and definethe cap size openin-g when the f17ee onds of tl1e stri.p are seour.ed together, and 110 additional strip is heeded for this pnrpose;
Hiwing thus described 1ny invention, it is obvious that various immaterial changes may be made in the szune without departing from the spirit of my invention; hence I do not wish to 1oeunderstood as limiting myself to f-he exa=ot form, arrangement, cons.truction and combination of arts herein shown and deseribed, excepfi as Iimited by the cl-ai1ns.
Vhat I claim as new .and desire to secure b-y Letters Patent is:
l. A cap comprising a crown piece; a vizor secured about the lower edge of a portion of the same; a continuos one-piece sweat band secured to said lower edge of the orown and also.secured to said vizor along a 1ine between the inner and onter edges of the vizo1 so as to overhe and concealthat port1on of the edge of.the crown securedto said vizor; and a hadsize defining strap stitched to said crown within said cap along the sides and being free of securement to the cap snbstantial- 1y a1ong said Vizor except atabove the ends of the latter; and means.for adjustably interconnecting ehe free ends of saidstrap, Whereby when the latter is adj usted, the sweat band Will roll .about the rear edge of said vizor an amount proportionate to said adjustment.
2. A. cap comprising a crown member; a vizor secured to thelower edge ofthe crown member; a sweat band secured along. t-he rear edge of said Vizor and to the 1ower edge of theorown rearwardly of the vizor; a headsize -defining reinforcing strap stitched along the rear and sides of the' lower edge of the crown member to points substantially above the ends ofsaid vizor and substantially free of securement to the crown above t-he re- 1naining ortion of the vizor, the free ends of said strap exteriorly overlying the crown at said vizor; and means for adjustably securing the free ends of said strap together 130 thereby vary the head-size of the oap, Whereby substantially a11.0f the adjustment of the cr-own Will be above said vizor, so as to be substantially concealed when the crown and vizor are brought together.
3. A cap comprising a erown member, a
Vizor secured to the lower edge of the crown member, a sweat band secured along the rear edge of said vizor and t-o the lower edge 'of the crown rearwardly of the vizor, a head size defining reenforcement strap stitched along the 1ea1 and sides 01 the lower edge of the crown member to points substantially above t-he -ends of said vizor and substantially free of seouroment to the crown above the re1naining po'rtion of the vizor, the free ends of said strapextending about the crown at said vizor, and xneans f01' adjustably securing the freo -ends of said strap together to thereby vary the the lower e dgo of the croWn me1nber to p0i'ntssubstant-ially above the ends -0f said vizor and substantially free of securement to t-he crown above theremaining po1tion -of the vizor, the free ends of said strap extend-ing abont the crown at said vizor, and ineans fOI" adjnstably secnring the f1"ee ends 0if said strap together to thereby vary the head size of the cap, whereby substantially all of the adjust-ment of the crown Will be abowa said the crown and vizor -are brought together, and when said adjnstment is being ma de the sWeat band Will roll about the rear edge of said vizor an amount proporti'onate justment.
