EDVARD IVILLIAM PITOHER, OF RED HOOK, NEl/V YORK.
CASH-DRAWER REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,208, dated October 19, 1897.
Application filed March 5, 1897.
T0 aZZwhom it mar concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD WILLIAM PITOHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Red Hook, county of Dutchess, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cash- Drawer Registers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to an improvement in cash-drawer registers, the object thereof being to provide a device of this character adapted for attachment to any common form of cash-drawer now in use, without in any Way affecting the operation or marring the appearance thereof.
The device is so constructed that the face thereof is obscured while the drawer is closed and exposed when the drawer is opened, whereby a Storekeeper or other user is supplied with a ready means forkeeping his accounts and entries of sales or other data can be readily made every time the drawer is opened.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating an open cashdrawer having my improved device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional elevation taken on a line2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the drawer in a closed position.
In the practice of my invention I provide a plate A, of sheet metal, wood, or other suitable material, having an 'inwardlyturned flange a extended around three edges thereof, whereby a casing is formed to receive a plurality of tally -sheets B, whereon a storekeeper can keep his accounts. These said tally-sheets are subdivided in any suitable manner adapted for containing a record of accounts comprising sales, money paid out, money received, &c., and they are adapted for ready removal for the purpose of bindingthem or for transferring the accounts to the ordinary books used in the transaction of business. This said casing or plate A is se- Serial No. 626,078. (No model.)
cured to the upper wall 0 of the drawer-frame O, and it is attached to a'spring-bow D, which is composed of resilient steel, its normal shape being illustrated by Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. The outer end at of this said spring is secured to an eye E, which is connected to the plate A, and this said eye engages with a slot a in the plate A by means of a nut e, wherebyv the eye can be adjusted across the plate to meet the requirements of drawers of variable proportions to which the device is adapted to be attached. The inner end d is securely attached in the side wall f of the drawer F by means of a countersunk screw d or any other suitable mode of attachment.
In the operation and use of the device it is obvious that while the drawer is in a closed condition the plate A will hang down over the face thereof and be retained in that position until the drawer is opened, whereby the faces of the tally-sheets B are obscured.
lVhen the drawer is opened, the spring D, assumingits normal position, will throw back the plate A until it rests firmly upon the upper surface of the drawer-frame, whereby the storekeeper can readily make an entry every time he opens the drawer to make change during the transaction of his business, and by this means an accurate account can be kept regarding each individual transaction.
This device'is especially applicable for at tachmentto drawers having combinationlocks connected therewith, but it can be ap plied to any cash-drawer which is mounted Within a framework having a flat upper sur= face. For instance, the device is especially ap* plicable for attachment to a drawer located directly beneath an ordinary storekeepers counter, in which case the plate A is hinged to the upper surface of the counter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A register adapted for attachment to sliding drawers, comprising a plate having a hinge thereon for attachment to the frame work of a drawer and a bow spring connected at one end to the said plate and adapted for attachment at its other end to one of the side Walls of the drawer,'substantially as shown and described.
2. As a cash-register, the combination of a plate harin g an inwardlyturned flange formed upon three edges thereof ior the purpose of receiving a tally-sheet, and an auxiliary plate hinged to said plate, said auxiliary plate adapted for attachment to the drawerframe, and a spring-bow attached to the said plate at one of its ends, said how adapted for attachment to a sliding drawer, substantially as shown and described.
As a cash-register, the combination of a plate having an inwardly-turned flange on the three edges thereof and a sliding eye engaged in a groove in one end thereof, and a hinged plate attached to the said frame and a bmv-spring having one end attached to the said eye; with a sliding drawer, and a framework for supporting the drawer said drawer being connected to the free end of the bowspring and said plate beinghinged to the upper surface of the framework, substantially as shown and described.
-,l-. The combination with a sterelmepens counter,of a sliding drawer and a hinged plate or casing carrying aeconntsheets, said plate hinged to the upper surface of the coiuiter and having a how-spring connected thereto which is also connected to the sliding drawer, whereby the said plate is operated by the sliding action of the drawer, snbstantiallyas shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the lloregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 1st day of March, 1897.
