Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 12, 1907.
Application filed October 19, 1906. Serial No. 339.599.
Im rovements in Bill-Files; and I do hereby dec are the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such asV will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a vsystem for use by grocers and the like storekeepers whereby to substantially entirely, if desired, eliminate bookkeeping and make the matter of keeping accounts with their customers extremely simple, as well as easy of ver-iiication.
In carrying out my invention I employ as a part of the system the bill-file or cabinet illustrated in the accompanying dra-wings, wherein- Figure 1 is a: front eleva-tion of said cabinet. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line a; a: in Fig. 2, the rear lower part being show n as broken away. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on thel line y y in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the billholders, and Fig. 6 shows one of the bills.
The cabinet comprises a back a., two horizontal side walls b, two inclined side walls c, the latter connecting the walls a. and b, and a bottom wall d. Between the side walls b and on the bottom wall d slides a drawer or till e., which in its closed position meets an abutment f, forming, with the bottom wall d, said walls b, and back wall a, a compartment in which the bills, &c., may be )laced This compartment has a cover g, w ich is hinged to a horizontal front wall h between the lower ends of the inclined side walls c in such manner that it covers the till as well as ther compartment.
Between the drawer or till and the cover g and against the side walls b are arranged horizontal guides i., on which runs a slide k in the form of a rectangular frame (see Fig. 4) and rabbeted, as at l, to receive a holder mv for a pa er sheet fn, and glass o, the holder being o sheet metal and having its side edges overlapping the sheet and glass, as at p, so that the latterl are Vheld in'place, but may be removed uponremoving the holder and sliding them out of the same. On the paper sheet is adapted to be inscribed the names of the customers with numbers opposite them (not shown) corresponding to the bill-holders hereinafter described, so that the whole forms a sort of directory to the bill-holders on which nothing is normally exposed but numbers or the like. The slide k has two rearward extensions g, whereby itmay be pulled clear out and yet be guided and held on the guides i.
On the wall 7L is a bead r, formin an abut-y ment, and between the two side wa ls cis another inclined-wall s, which forms with the inclined walls c and the abutment 1' a pocket for the bill-holders and their mountings. Each of said mountings Aconsists of a Wall t and two side strips u, which roject above the wall t and are secured t ereto, as by screws fe. There are as many of the Inountings as desired-say, four, as in Fig. 1'and they are all held together by pins w, having their ends upset or riveted. In each mounting is arranged a series of bill-holders each of which (see Fig. '5) is a sheet-metal plate having its two side edges fz/ turned up, as also an intermediate portion z at its lower end, so as to prevent the bills placed therein from sidewise and downward movement. The series of mountings being all held together by the pins w may be bodily removed, with their bill-holders, from the cabinet for placing in a safe at night or any other purpose. In each holder is a clip 1, consisting of a wiremebent and having its ends 2 coiled about the pin rw, so that the clip is pressed against the tllls in the holder. (See Fig. 5.) Each clip also acts to press each holder against its neighbor above it, all the holders thus being normallyheld in the position shown in Fig. 2 in full lines, but being capable of being turned out on its pivot, as shown in dotted lines.
The bill adapted to be used in connection with my system is that shown in Fig. 6, which has a space at 3 wherein to insert the total of a previous bill or bills. When .an order is made out in the store for a person running an account, the clerk enters the items and the charges therefor on one of these bills' andv places the same in the bill-holder assigned to IOO ICS
that particular customer, which he ascertains by number from the directory; ,but before filing the' bill, a copy of Whichgoes to the customer, he Venters the total of previous bills already led in the space 3, so that the customer and the proprietor can tell at once at any time what is owing. The last bill filed, therefore, always shows the full account of any particular customer, and When the account is settled the bills in the holder may be destroyed or handed over to him.
Instead lof utilizing the first holder in each series in Fig. 1 for customers having an account, since it is undesirable to expose what their accounts are to others, these holders m'ay be utilized for such business as C. I(A). D. bills or for bills for goods Which-are to be `de-V livered at a future date by given Wagons or: employees, (W. No. 1, te., in Fig. 1 standing for Wagoni N o. 1,) or otherwise.
Having thu's fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-ters Patent, is
The combination of acabinet com rising an inclined pocket and a horizonta ly-disposed Wall-inclosed space below said pocket, a hinged cover for said space, a drawer occupying a part of said space, a directory-slide arranged above said drawer in said space, and bill-holdersarranged in said pocket and a mounting Vremovably supported in said pocket and carrying said bill-holders, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereuutoset my hand this 11th day of July, 1906.
