Description

E. DUNCAN.
m. 59,196. Patented' Oct. 30, 1866.
MIIT/VESSES 1 v5 70/ N. PETERS. mmumu n w. Wuhington. n. c.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELI DUNCAN, OF WEST MILTON, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59, [96, dated October 30, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELI DUNCAN, of West Milton, in the county of Miami and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, A, A, and A represent the slats of the gate, which said slats are secured at each end and at proper distance apart by means of pivots or pins put through them and through the battens B B on each side. The upper rail, A, is provided on its upper edge with a series of notches, w w w, as shown.
O 0 represent two braces, one on each side of, the rails. These braces are pivoted to the bottom rail near its forward end, and pass up diagonally to the upper rail near its rear end. These braces are connected at their top, and above the rail A, by means of a pin, which said pin rests in one of the notches of the rail A.
0 represents a roller pivoted at the bottom of the front end of the gate for said front end to rest upon.
It will be observed that the inclination of this gate can be changed by changing the pin (1, which connects the braces O O in the notches w w. With these braces it is not necessary that there should be any center battens.
This gate can be placed on hill-sides or uneven ground and adjusted to suit the ground.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- A gate composed of a series of horizontal bars, when the upper bar, A, is notched near one end, 00, to catch a pin, d, which connects the upper ends of the bars 0 O, and arranged with the roller 6, in the manner andfor the purposes specified.
As evidence that 1 claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
ELI DUNCAN. Witnesses:
R. It. CHASE, G. W. PEIROE.
