IMPROVEMENT IN SWINGING AND TILTlNG GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,5 17, dated November 30, 1875; application filed September 3, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMos BRINKERHOFF, of Golden Corners, in the county of Wayne and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to construct a gate in such manner that the free or swinging end may be raised and locked at any desired height, in order to pass snow or other obstructions which may lie in its path; may be raised byan animalsay, a pig-to such height as will permit him to pass under, the gate returning to its former position; maybe locked down by a brace, so that it cannot be thus lifted; and may be supported against sagging by the same brace, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the drawing, which is a side view of my improved gate, A is the post, to which the hinges a are attached; and B the post with which the latch engages. G O are the end posts, to which the rails D are pivoted at each end, as at c. E is a girt-braee, pivoted at its upper end to the post 0, and at its lower or front end to a sliding bar, E, arranged bet-ween two of the rails D. The rear end of this bar is secured against lateral displacement by the girt-brace E, there being one. of these braces upon each side of the gate, the front end of this bar being retained in proper position by means of a vertical cleat or stopbar, F, one on each side of the gate. The sliding bar E is provided with a number of perforations, e a, into which a pin, 0, fits.
The upright cleats F may be adjusted longitudinally upon rails D by means of pins f and holes at in the rails.
G is a latch, constructed to slide between the cleats F, and through a mortise cut or formed for its reception in post 0. The front end of the latch enters a groove, b, in the inner face of post B, the groove being indicated by dotted lines. 9 is a spring, employed to force the latch into the groove.
It will be readily seen, from an examination of the drawings, if the pin c be placed in one of the holes 0, which are in front of the cleats or stop-bars F, the weight, or the front part of the gate, will be suspended upon the bracegirt E, and that the position of the gate upon this brace-girt may be adjusted by means of this pinas, if the gate be lifted up, the bar E will be thrust farther toward post 0; and, if the pin be then inserted in one of the holes which are, by this operation, projected in front of stop-bar F, the front end of the gate will be suspended in this elevated position.
It is also apparent that when the gate is in the position shown in the drawings the pin 0 can be inserted in the hole 6 which is next in rear of the stop-bar F, and the front end of the gate thereby locked down.
When it is desired to take up any sag in the gate, such an adjustment may be made by moving one end, or both ends, of each bar F forward, as may be required.
The spring 9 will retain the latch G in the groove 1) in the post when the gate is rising and falling, as above described.
That portion of the hinge'which is attached to the post 0 consists of a strap, the central part of which is looped to embrace the pin or hook of the male part of the hinge, the ends of the strap being bent to clasp or embrace the post.
What I claim is 1. The combination of the sliding bar E, the girt-brace E, the pin 6 and the stop-bars F, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the adjustable stopbars F with the rails D, substantially as set forth. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my ownl aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
AMOS BRINKERHOFF.

JAMES BLACK.
