No. 206,942. Patented Aug. 13, I878.
aft/105,80? Z trig 0 f. m l/mil' ymk UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HILAND GOODWIN, OF IONIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM H. HOOD, OF RONALD, MICHIGAN.
lM PROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,942, dated August 13, 1878; application filed December 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HILAND 'W. GOODWIN, of Ionia, in the county of Ionia and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in the construction of a farm-gate so that it may be elevated on its outer or swinging end by means of an adjustable brace, so as to swing it open over an obstruction or over rising ground, in the manner hereinafter fully set forth.
The invention also consists in so hingin g the gate that its hinged end may be elevated or adjusted independently of or in harmony with its swinging end.
The invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1. is an elevation of the improved gate with its rails placed in a horizontal position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the gate with its rails raised up on the front end of the gate by means of the adjustable brace.
The gate consists of horizontal or nearly horizontal rails or bars A, jointed to the vertical posts B B by means of the round pins to,
one pin through the end of each rail or bar and its post, the posts preferably mortised, so as to allow the ends of the rails to pass into them, and the whole arranged so as to allow the rails of the gate to be moved up or'down upon the said pins to as on hinges.
The rear post, 13, is hinged by the hinges b b to the fixed post 0 in the manner hereinafter more fully described. The front or swinging post, B, when the gate is shut, closes against the fixed post 0', stops 0, attached to this latter post near its bottom, serving to hold the gate fast in its closed position, the vertical movement of the front end of the gate on the pins a rendering it easy to lift the free end of the gate into its seat in the stops 0.
An adjustable brace, D, (preferably formed of two pieces, one placed on either side of the gate,) is attached to the top rail of the gate by the pivot-pin d, on which the brace is allowed a free swinging movement, and through the bottom of the brace is placed another pin, (1, the latter being placed just below one of the lower rails or bars of the gate, the bottom edge of which bar is provided with notches a, into which the pin (1 will catch, so as to hold the bars of the gate in any desired position, as shown in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 2, or at any other desired angle.
A lever, E, pivoted to the gate at e, is arranged to pass below a pin, (1", of the brace, so as to lift it or lower it thereon, as may be desired.
The post B is slotted, and the eyes of the hinges b 1" project through said slot, and are fixed in a bar, G, which rests against the inner face of the post B. This inner or hinge end of the gate, by means of this manner of securing the hinges, is capable of being elevated or raised independently of the front or opening end of the gate, and it may be held at different heights by a pin, F, passed through any one of the holes f in the post B. The said pin F engages with the eye of the top hinge for this purpose.
The object in making this end of the gate capable of independent elevation. is to provide an opening for the passage of small animals. The inner end of the gate being elevated, the front end may also be elevated to the same or a greater height by means of the lever E and brace D, before described. This elevating of the gate will be found advantageous when the roadway is blocked with snow or other obstruction, for the gate can be raised so far above such obstructions as to be swung clear of them.
It will be noticed that the barG and the eye portion of the hinges are stationary, and that the gate is moved up and down upon them.
Having thus described my invention, 1 desire to claim- The bar G, arranged upon the inner face of the slotted and perforated post B, in combina tion with the hinges b b and the pin F, for the purpose of permitting an independent adjust ment of the inner end of the gate, substantially as shown and described.
HILAND W. GOODWIN.
