SPINDLE FOR SPINNING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,054, dated October 5, 1897. Application filed April 24, 1897- Seria1No.633,'708. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: Be it knownthat we, LUDGER ALEXANDR OCTAVE NIooL and EUGENE AYOTTE, citizens of the Dominion of Canada, residing at the city of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spindles for scription of the invention, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to spindles for spinning-machines; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the spindle. Fig. 2 is a crosssection through the same, taken on the line 03 0c in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view of a portion of the bolster.
A is the bolster-case, provided with a flange a and a nut A for securing it to the frame of the machine. The bolster-case A has a long cylindrical hole B and is closed at the bottom I).
C is the bolster, which is slipped into the hole B. 'A ball 0 is arranged in a cavity in the lower part of the bush 0, and dis a screwthreaded plug which engages with the lower. end portion of the bolster and clamps the ball in position;
D is the spindle, which carries the spool. This spindle has a bearing portion d, which is journaled in the upper portion of the bolster. The spindle also has a bearing portion e, which is journaled in the-lower part of the bolster. The lower end of the spindle has a conical point e, which runs on the ball 0, and the said ball is preferably made of hardened steel.
The outer periphery of the bolster is provided with one or more longitudinal slots or grooves f and a series of circumferential grooves f.
F are holes through the bolster at the bottoms of the grooves.
The flange 0.7 on the socket has a recess 9 in its'upper side, and g is an oil-hole lead ing from thesaid recess into the hole 18.
G is an annular plate which is placed over the recess g, so that dust cannot enter it. Oil is poured intothe recess when the plate G is raised and finds its way to the spindle-bearings through the grooves and holes of the bolster.
H is a whirl secured on the spindle JD, and h is a cup secured on the sleeve h of the said pulley. The cup h is for receiving the lower end portion of the bobbin and preventing it from splitting.
I is a catch having a projection 7; on one side. This catch is screwed into a hole in the flange a, so that the projection 2' comes above the Whirl H and prevents the spindle from being raised. The spindle can be lifted out from its bearings by turning the catch one-quarter around. The spindle runs with very little friction on the ball, and when it has worn a spot on the periphery of the ball the bolster is taken out and the ball is moved so as to bring another part of its surface under the spindle. The ball is unclamped by turning the plug backward and is reclamped after being adjusted.
What we claim is-- 1. The combination, with a spindle, and its bolster; of a ball supporting the said spindle, and means for clamping the said ball in the bolster, substantially as set forth. 2. The combination, with a spindle, and a bolster provided with a cavity in its lower part; of a ball arranged in the said cavity under the spindle, and a plug screwed into the lower end portion of the said bolster and clamping the said ball in the cavity, substantially as set forth. i
In testimony whereof we affix our signaturesin presence of two Witnesses.
LUDGER A. O. NIOOL. EUGENE AYOTTE.
