'NI'IE STATES,
PATENT Cirrrcn.
WILLIAM F. DRAPER, OF HOPEDALE, MASSACHUSETTS.
SUPPORT FOR SPINNING-SPINDLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392.912, dated November 13, 1888.
Application filed May 1, 1888. Serial No. 272,517.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM F. Danna, of Hopedale, county of \Vorcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement iii-Supports for SpinningSpindles, of which the following .description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object to provide a spindle with bearings wherein it may run with the minimum of friction and with great steadiness or freedom from gyration.
In accordance with my invention I have provided the supporting-case or holder within the sleeve-whirl with a lateral bearing having rolling surfaces, and the step I have supported loosely or by means of a spring.
My invention consists, essentially, in a spindle and supporting-case or holder combined with a bolster or bearing having rolling surfaces and with a step and a spring to sustain it in a yielding manner, as will be hereinafter described.
Figure 1 in section shows a rail, a spindlesupporting ease or holder, and bolster and step bearings embodying my invention, and a sleeve-whirl, the spindle being shown in elevation. w, and Fig. 3 shows the spider for holding the rolling surfaces of the bolster-bearing.
The rail A, the spindle-supporting case or holder B, and the spindle 0, having the sleevewhirl O, are and may be all as usual. The case or holder is kept seated onthe rail B by a suitable nut, D, which, as herein shown, is extended and made as a cup to receive loosely the step E, the shank of which is shown as surrounded by a spring, 0, which latter sus- Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 in the line (No model.)
the spindle to thus avoid jar, as is well uuderstood.
At or near its upper end, and at a point Within the sleeve-whirl, I have provided the (3.180 or holde'r with a bolster having rolling surfaces b b, kept within the casein proper position by, as herein shown, a spider, c, the lower ends of the rolling or cylindrical surfaces being supported by and rotating on a bearing-plate, I)", sustained by a shoulder in the case B.
I do not herein claim a bearing having rolling and rigid surfaces, as the same has been made the subject of claim in my application, Serial N o. 266, 730, filed March 9, 1888.
I have herein shown the spring 6 of such construction as to permit not only lateral mo tion of the foot of the spindle, but also a slight extent of vertical motion; but I desire it to be understood that I should consider as within my invention any l'orm'of spring which permitted only a lateral motion to the step.
I claim- 1. The spindle and the supporting-case or holder, combined with a bolster-bearing having rolling surfaces and with a step and spring to support and permit the step to move laterally, substantially as described.
2. The spindle and the supporting-case or holder, combined with the bolster-bearing having rolling surfaces 1), and a step and spring to support and permit the step to yield not only laterally, but vertically, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
