Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. ROSEN- CRANTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing in Hohokus, Bergen county, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spindles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
This invention relates to spindles fonspinning silk and other filaments; and its object is to provide such spindles with bearings whereby the friction heretofore encountered in operating the same is greatly reduced, and accordingly the said spindles can be rotated at a higher rate of speed and with greater steadiness.
The invention consists in the improved ballbearing for the spindle, which furnishes the lateral support for the saine, while said spindle is verticallysupported by a step-bearing, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
In the accompanying drawing,.which represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved spinning-spindle, a is the rail, penetrated by the bolster b, flexibly or firmly secured to said rail in any desired or wellknown manner. In the annular flange b of said bolster is arranged a channel h', connecting the central vertical hole in said bolster with the oil cup or chamber 7L.
The upwardly-extending portion of the bolster ZJ is provided with an annular shoulder b2, on which rests the ring or collar c, revolubly mounted on the bolster and prevented from a vertical movement by the annular shoulder f3, formed within the sleeve fof the whirl f. Said sleeve f is securely mounted on the spindle d, the lower tapering portion d of which rests with its extreme end in the step c, provided for within the bolster b.
It must be remarked that the diameter of the lower portion d of the spindle is smaller than the internal diameter of the central hole 5o or opening in said bolster.
WVithin the enlarged hollow portion f2 of the sleeve-whirl are arranged a series of antifriction-balls g, adapted to bear against the annular ring c, and which balls are prevented. from dropping out of saidv sleeve-whirl by means of an annular ring h, inserted into said enlarged hollow portion f2 and secured therein in any desired manner.
The Sleeve-whirl f f' is provided with a 6o' .struction the friction is reduced'to a minimum, especially in view of the fact that the antifriction-balls bear against the revolublymounted annular ring or collar e, which latter during the operation of the spindle rotates at a very slow speed, and accordingly the bearing for the antifriction-balls is being continuously changed. By this arrangement 8o the durability of said spindles is greatly increased.
A spindle ofthe above construction requires very little oiling, as the lubricant which -enters (through the channel h) the bolster b is 8 5 'carried upward on the tapering spindle by means of centrifugal force and is thrown by the latter against the inner wall of the sleeve whirl f and returns, after lubricating the ballbearing and the revolubly-mounted ring or 9o collar e, through the annular groove b3 and channel b4 to the bolster ZJ.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with the bolster, of a spindle stepped in said bolster, a sleeve-whirl mounted on said spindle, a series of antifriction-balls arranged in said sleeve-whirl, and an annular ring or collar revolubly mounted on the bolster and interposed between the latter and the antifriction-balls, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination with the bolster, of a spindle stepped in said bolster, a sleeve-whirl mounted on said spindle and provided With an inwardly-extending annular shoulder, a series of antifriction-balls Within said sleeve- Whirl and bearing on its annular shoulder, a ring removably arranged Within said sleevewhirl for retaining the antifriotion-balls, and an annular ring or collar interposed between the antifriction-balls and the bolster and revolubly mounted on the latter, substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. The combination with the bolster, provided on its upper portion with an annular shoulder, an annular ring bearing on said shoulder and removably mounted on the bolster,a spindle stepped in said bolster,a sleevewhirl mounted on said spindle and provided with an inwardly-extending shoulder, a series of antifriction-balls Within said sleevewhirl and bearin g against said shoulder and the annular ring or collar respectively,and an annular ring removably secured Within the v sleeve-Whirl for retaining said antifrictionballs, substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. The combination With the bolster, provided in its annular flange with an annular groove communicating with the central vertical hole in said bolster through a channel, of a spindle stepped in said bolster, a sleeve- Whirl mounted on said spindle and extending into the annular groove in the iange of the bolster, and a series of antifriction-balls interposed between said sleeve-Whirl and the bolster, substantially as and for the purposes described.
5. The combination with the bolster, provided in its annular iange with an annular groove communicating through a channel with the central vertical hole of the bolster, of a spindle stepped in said bolster, a sleeve- Whirl mounted on said spindle and extending into the said annular groove in the ange of the bolster, a series of antifriction-balls arranged Within said sleeve-Whirl, and an annular ring or collar interposed between the said an tifriction-balls and the bolster, and removably mounted on the latter, substantially as and for the purposes described.
