S. H. STREET. HEAT RETAINING 0R PROTECTING PACKAGE IOR FOODS, &c.
Patented Sept. 21,1897.
anus PEYERS co.. FuoTo-uma. wAsums'rou u c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL H. STREET, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
HEAT-RETAINING OR PROTECTING PACKAGE FOR FOODS, 800.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,406, dated September 21, 1897.
Application filed January 7, 1897.
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL H. STREET, of
' New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Heat-Retainin g or Protecting Packages for Foods, 850.; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view of a package constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional view of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in packages or wrappers for retaining the heat in vessels containing food or other substances which it is desirable to protect from cold or protect from the cold substances which it is desired to keep warm, the object of the invention being to produce a thorough protection; and it consists in certain details of construction, as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claims.
Preferably the device will be arranged in the form of a box or pail, of oil-cloth or other flexible waterproof material, but may be of tin, leather, canvas, or other suitable material as best adapted for the purpose for which it is to be used, and which may be readily cleansed without injury to the lining. Within this casing I arrange a lining which consists of a sheet B of animal wool interposed between sheets 0 D of asbestos, and, if desired, the box or pail may be provided with a lining E, of oil-cloth or canvas, leather, or other flexible material.
The package may be closed by a cover F, independent of or attached to the casing and consisting of a sheet G of animal wool interposed between sheets II of asbestos of proper size to closely fit the interior wall of the package. If desired, the outer face of the cover may be covered by a sheet I of oil-cloth, tin, leather, or canvas corresponding to the outer surface of the package, and to which may be secured a handle or loop J.
If desired, two or more disks or covers may be placed in the package, so as to form one Serial No. 618,247. (No model.)
or more compartments therein; but in every instance, and as shown in Fig. 2, the edges of the wool lining will be exposed, so as to form a close contact with the interior wall of the receptacle. A bail K may also be fixed to the package in the usual manner.
The advantage of using animal wool in combination with asbestos is that they are both perfect non-conductors and exclude heat or cold, so that the contents of the package may retain its normal temperature.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A protecting-package consisting of an outer casing of Waterproof material lined with protecting medium of animal wool interposed between sheets of asbestos paper, and a cover or disk of like material arranged to close the open end of said casing, the edges of the pro tecting medium in the cover or disk being exposed, substantially as described.
2. A protecting-package consisting of an outer casing of flexible waterproof material lined with a protecting medium of animal wool interposed between sheets of asbestos papers, and a cover or disk of like material arranged to close the open end of said casing, the edges of the protecting medium in the cover or disk being exposed, substantially as described.
3. A protecting-package consisting of an outer casing of waterproof material lined with protecting medium of animal wool interposed between sheets of asbestos paper, and two covers or disks adapted to fit the interior of said casing whereby compartments may be formed therein, the edges of the protecting medium in the cover or disk being exposed, whereby a close contact is formed between the edges of said cover or disk and the interior of said casing, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
