IMPROVED FUMIGATOR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,025, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Isaac HUToHrNs, Jr., of Wellington, Piscataquis county, and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Fumigator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to .make and. use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming .part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal central section of my improved fumigator.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved instrument for destroying lice and ticks upon sheep and cattle by fumigating them with tobacco-smoke; and it consists, first, of the cylinder or box for containing the burning tobacco, in combination with the bellows; and, second, in the combination of aperforated plate with the cylinder or box, for the purpose of preventing the tobacco from passing into and clogging the discharging-orifice of the said cylinder.
A is the bellows, which is formed of two circular disks, a1 and a2, connected together y at their edges by a leather or other iiexible band, as shown in the drawing. To the center of one of these disks, al, is attached a handle, a3, by means of which the bellows A is operated. To the center of the other disk, a2, is attached a pipe, a, through which the blast escapes from the bellows.
c5 is the valve which, as the disks are drawnapart in operating the bellows, opens to admit the air, and as the disks are pressed together closes, and the air is forced out through the pipe a4. The outer end of the pipe a4 is enlarged into a cap, as shown in the drawing, into which is screwed the end of the cylinder or box B, as shown. This cylinder' or boxis made of sufficientsize to hold the de sired amount of tobacco. The outer end of the cylinder or box B is contracted into a nozzle, b', with a small discharging orifice, as shown.
G is a perforated plate or wire sieve inserted in the cylinder B just above the nozzleb, as shown, so as to prevent the tobacco from entering the said nozzle and cloggingthe discharging-orifice.
In using the apparatus, the cylinder B is filled, or partially filled, with tobacco and lighted upon the top. The bellows A' is then operated, which forces the smoke out through the nozzle b.
In fumigating sheep the nozzle b is inserted in the wool and moved from place to place till the wholefleece is filled with the smoke. The instrument may also be used for destroying insects on plants and trees by smoking them in the manner described.
I claim as new and desire to securc'by Letters Patentg l. The cylinder or box B, constructed as described, in combination with the bellows A, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the perforated plate U with the cylinder or box B, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.`
