PATENT OFFICE.
SYLVANUS D. JONES, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVED FLOUR-SIFTER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,987, dated April 17, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SYLvANUs D. J oNEs, of Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improved Sifter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description, rei'- erence being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specication.
The nature of my invention consists in furnishing an instrument to be used in combination with a common sieve, to facilitate the passage of any substance to be sii'ted.
.To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Figure l represents a perspective view, Where a piece of Wire is coiled around, forming au open disk, the ends of which are then turned up, as shown, and secured to the handle A. This instrument may be made in a variety of forms; but that shownin thedrawingis deemed to be equal to any in cheapness of construction and adaptation to the purpose. A perforated plate of metal or piece of wire-cloth, or any equivalent forming a similar surface, with handle attached, may also be used.
This instrument is to be used by passing` it around over the Wire-cloth forming the bottom of the sieve, as shown in Fig. 2, by which means the material is stirred up and forced through the sieve, and at the same time contact With the hands is avoided.
In order to prevent rusting I apply a coating to the Wire or other material used by tinnin g, galvanizin g, or otherwise ooverin g it` With any substance suitable for the purpose.
