IMPROVEMENT IN SHIFTING CARRIAGE-TOPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,0 l 4, dated October 23, 1866.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, A. V. HEYDEN, of the city and county of Milwaukee, and State of WVisconsin, have invented a new and'useful Improvement in Shifting Carriage-Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of the bottom of a carriage-seat with part of my improvement; Fig. 2, a top view of the same with myimprovement attached 3 Fig. 3, a front view of the seat and top-frame; Fig. 4, a cross-sectional view of the seat and top; Fig. 5, a front view of the top-frame detached from the seat; Fig. 6, a cross-sectional view of the top; Fig. 7, front view of seat; Fig. 8, cross-section of seat.

The nature of my invention consists in a novel arrangement of a carriage top and seat, so that the top can be easily detached and replaced again.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

A is the carriage-seat B, back of the topframe; 0, metal plate or base of the carriagetop; D and E E, catches or buttons on the seat to confine plate 0 to the seat; F F, le-

ver-catches on the bottom of the seat to lock the front of the top to the seat 5 G, crosslever with which to operate lever-catches F F; H, spring-catch to hold lever G in place when the lever-catches F- F are locked; I I,

front supports to the top, projecting down through the seat, with slots in said projections for lever-catches F F to look into.

Operation: When the top is secured to the seat, to remove it turn the catches D and E E back from over plate 0 and draw back levercatches F F, with cross-lever G, springH being pressed against the seat to let lever G pass over it. Then lift the top from the seat. To replace it, place it back again with supports I I passing through the bottom of the seat. It may then be fastened to the seat by turning catches D and E E over plate C and locking lever-catches F F into the slots in the ends of supports I I. When lever-catches F F are locked in said slots, catches E E are not required to be turned over plate. 0, and when catches E E are turned over plate 0 the locking of levercatches F F may be dispensed with; but in either case, or when both catches E E and levercatches FF are used, the catch D is indispensapassing through seat A, with slots or notches in their lower ends, into which catches F F are locked by means of lever G, and held in position by spring-catch H, together with catch D, to hold the middle of plate 0 firmly to seat A, all in combination, substantially as and for the purpose .described.
