Description

NTTED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
JAMES HARRIS, 0F KANSAS, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,0l0,datcd October 23, 1866.
Figure lis a side View of my invention Fig.
2, a plan or top view of the same with the handles removed or detached; Fig. 3, a detached side view of a shovel-plow pertaining to the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to a newand improved double or gang plow; and consists in a peculiar construction of the same, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a very strong and durable plow of the kind speciiied is obtained, and one which will vadmit of a shovel-plow being substituted for a breaking` or mold-board plow, so that the device may be used as a cultivator when required.
A represents the beam of the plow, having handles B B attached, and braced by a metal bar, U, secured to the rear end ofthe beam.
D represents a metal standard, the upper end of which is tted in the beam A, and secured by a nut, a, 011 its upper end, said standard being braced by a bar, b, from the beam A, as shown in Fig. l.
E represen ts a breaking or mold-board plow, which is attached to the standard D, and is braced at its upper end from the beam A by means of a bar, c.
To one side of the beam A-the right-hand side in this instance-a curved or bent metal bar, F, is securely bolted. The shape of this bar is shown clearly in Fig. 2, and it will be seen that it extends some distance out from the beam A, and has the upper end of a standard, G, secured to it by screw-bolts d d, the standard fitting in a dovetail groove, d", in said bar F, as shown in Fig. 2.
The standard G has a plow, H, attached to it like the plow E, and the plow H, which is at the rear of plow E, turns its furrow-slice over and upon that turned by the front plow,-
E. By this arrangement a double or gang plow is obtained with a single beam, and the two plows will turn over a surface of earth considerably wider than can be turned by a single plow and under a moderate draft.
By detaching the rear plow, H, a shovelplow, I, may be adjusted in its place, and the device used as a cultivator.
I do not claim, broadly, a double or gang plow. They are an old and well-known device; but
I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The attaching of the rear plow, I-I, to the beam A by means of a bent bar, F, projecting laterally from the beam, and having a dovetail groove, dx, made in it to receive the plowstandard, in combination with the front plow, E, attached tothe standard D, which is secured to the beam, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
