Description

0. ATWOOD.
Gang Plow.
No 51,536. Patented Dec. 19, 1865 .F N EIERS, PHOTO-LIYNDGRAPNER, WASHINGTON. D C
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIc GAROLL ATWOOD, OF LEBANON, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN GANG-PLOWS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OAROLL ATWOOD, of Lebanon, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Gang-Plow; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure l is. a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line m at, Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a plan or top View of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved gang-plow and it consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, whereby the plows may be very readily adjusted to gage the depth of the furrows, as may be desired, the plows adjusted laterally according to the width of furrow required, and the plows prevented from choking with weeds, grass, &c.
A represents an axle, and B B wheels attached thereto, one wheelB, having its arm rather higher than the other, in order that said wheel may run on the land side or unplowed portion of the field, and, in consequence of being higher than the other wheel, B, which runs in the furrow, admit of the framing of the machine being level or horizontal.
G O are two parallel bars or sills, the rear parts of which are bolted permanently to the axle at right angles thereto, and the front ends connected by a transverse bar, D, to which the draft-pole E is attached.
F F are also two parallel bars or sills, which are attached to the axle A and bar D, but not permanently, the bolts a, which pass through them, passing through an oblong slot, 1), in the axle A and bar D, to admit of the sills F F being adjusted at a greater or less distance apart, for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
G G are two plow-beams, the front ends of which are attached to the sills F F by joints or hinges c c, which admit of the plow-beams being raised or lowered from c c as centers. These plow-beams pass through metal guides or straps A, which are secured to the rear ends of the sills F F, andare connected at their upper ends by a metal bar, H, one end of which has a longitudinal slot, d, made in it for the bolt d to pass through and admit of the lateral adjustment of the beams with the sills F F. The beams G" G are also con nected near their rear ends by two metal bars.
I I, one above and the other below the plowbeams, said bars being connected permanently at one end to one of the beams, and the opposite ends passing between a clamp, J, and the beam, the clamp admitting of the bars I moving when the beams G are to be adjusted.
K K are the plows, which may be of the usual form employed for turning a furrowslice. These plows are attached to metal standards L L, the upper ends of which are secured to the rear of the beams G G by pivotbolts 6. (See Fig. 1.)
To the rear part of each laudside f of the plows a rod, M, is connected by a pivot, g, and the upper parts of these rods have screwthreads cut on them to receive jam-nuts h h, the rods passing through plates N at the rear of the beams, with a nut, h, above and one below them. (See Fig. 1.)
By tur'ning or adjusting the nuts h 71, the points of the plows K may be raised and lowered to suit or gage the depth of the furrow required, and the plows are elevated entirely above the surface of the ground, when necessary, by means of a lever, O, which is connected by a strap, P, with the beams, and has its fulcrum on the bar H.
The plows are retained in an elevated state by means of a catch-lever, Q.
By adjusting the sills F Flaterall y, or nearer together or farther apart, the width of the furrow-slice may be regulated as desired.
R R represent fenders, which are composed of bars attached to the rear of the sills F F. The lower portion of these bars have a horizontal position and an oblique one relatively with the plows, the upper parts being vertical and attached at their upper ends to the sills. These fenders serve to prevent the plows being choked up with weeds, grass, &c.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The metal bars H and I I, in connection with the clamp J, all arranged substantially as shown, to admit of the lateral adjustment'or the plow-beams with the sills F F, for the purpose set forth.
OAROLL ATWOOD.
