Description

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
J. H. BARLEY, OF LONGWOOD, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEM ENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57.660, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I,J. H. BARLEY,of Longwood, Pettis county, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and Improved Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings, forming part of this'specification, in which-- Figure l is a plan or top view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side sectional view of my invention taken in the line 00 m, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved cultivator of that class which are provided with two laterally-moving plows; and it consists of anew and improved construction and arrangement of parts, as herein shown and described, whereby said plows may be readily operated or moved laterally to conform to the sinuosities of the rows of plants, a strong and desirable implement obtained, and one which may be manufactured at a small expense.
AArepresent two parallel plow-beams, having each a standard, 13, attached with a plow, G, secured to its lower end. Each beam A has two iron bars, D D, attached to it in an inclined position, and to the upper ends of these bars a cross-piece, E, is secured, to which the upper ends of two standards, F F, are attached by pivot-bolts, plows G being attached to the lower ends of the standards F F. These standards F F have bars F connected to them, the front ends of the latter being pivoted in a bar, H, which connects the front ends of the plow-beams.
To each plow-beam A there is secured an upright, I, the upper ends of which are slotted vertically to receive a bar, J, which may be secured higher or lower in said uprights by pins (1, and to this bar J curved handles K K are attached by pivots b, the lower ends of the handles having rods 0 fitted in them, which rods pass through any of a series of holes in the bars F, as shown clearly in Fig. 2. The handles K K are connected by a bar, L.
The front ends of the plow-beams are secured, by joints or hinges d d, to the front end of amounted frame, (shown in red,) and it will be seen from the above description that as the machine is drawn along the driver may move the handles K laterally, and consequently give a lateral motion to the plows; and this lateral motion may be given by the hands or by applying the shoulders to the handles, the hands being used for the purpose when the driveris riding on the mounted frame, and the shoulders being used, if preferred, when the driver is walking behind the machine.
The handles K may be adjusted higher or lower, to suit the height of the driver, by adjusting the bar J higher or lower in the uprights I I, and inserting the rods cin different holes in the bars F.
The iron bars D D, attached to the plowbeams A, admit of the cross-piece E being elevated above the beams, so that the standards F may work laterally with a proper sweep.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The iron bars D D, attached to the plowbeams A A, to support the cross-piece E a suitable distance above the plow beams, in connection with the plow-standards F F, pivoted to the cross-piece, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The curved handles K K, pivoted to the adjustable bar J, and connected to the bars F, which are pivoted in the bar H and secured to the plow-standards F F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7 J. H. BARLEY.
WVitnesses:
THos. J. DUDLEY, T. K. BARLEY.
