" UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JERRY J. LYNCH, OF WILKES-BARBIE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- FIFTIIS TO WVILLIAM O. BLASE, 0 F SAME PLACE.
ATTACHMENT FOR PIPES, CIGAR-HOLDERS, AND CIGARETTEHOLDERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,869, dated August 24, 1897.
Q Application filed December 18, 1896. Seri l No- 6l6,157. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JERRY J. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, residing atWilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Pipes, Cigar-Holders, and Cigarette-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for pipes, cigar-holders, and cigarette-holders and similar articles which may be placed across the opening of the mouthpiece or stem of the pipe, cigar-holder, or cigarette-holder in such a way as to divide, turn aside, or break up the stream 'of smoke issuing therefrom, causing it to enter the mouth in several small streams orin a spray at an angle to the opening or bore of the mouthpiece, which will prevent the smoke from coming in direct contact with the tongue, thereby preventing irritation of the tongue, commonly known as burning of the tongue. It will also prevent the point of the tongue from coming in contact with the nicotineeharged liquidwhich may lie in the opening of the mouthpiece and being thereby irritated. Moreover, as the smoke enters the mouth in several very small streams or in a spray and comes in contact with a greater portion of the interior of the mouth at once not only is the irritating effect reduced to a minimum, but the tobacco efiect is increased, whereby the user may have not only a cooler but a more enjoyable smoke. Furthermore, the use of my attachment prevents the nicotine-charged liquid from escaping from the mouthpiece and saturating and scenting the clothing when the pipe or holderis carried in the pocket.
Referring now to the drawings which illustrate my invention, and in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts wherever they occur, Figure l is an elevational View of a pipe, partly in section, provided with my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a side view of my attachment detached from the pipe, and Fig. 3 is an end View of my attachment.
The letter A represents a pipe, and B my attachment.
The attachment 13 consists of a piece of metal or other material, the head Bof which is provided with numerous grooves 12. The head B maybe of any desired form and size. The grooves b may be as numerous as desired. The attachment B is provided with a stem or shank B extending rearwardly from the head B, and may be of any desired length and form, and is of a size that maybe readily introduced in the bore of the mouthpiece of the stem of the pipe. In the stem B I form bends b, which as the stem or shank B is introduced into the stem of the pipe impinge against the walls of the opening in the stem of the pipe, thereby holding the attachment firmly in place, so that it cannot be displaced or drop out of the stem of the pipe by accident. The stem or shank of my attachment B is sufficiently less in diameter than the bore or opening in the stem of the pipe, cigarholder, or cigarette-holder with which it is used to permit of a free passage of smoke into and through the grooves 17, formed in the head of the attachment, and from thence into the mouth of the smoker or user of the pipe.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a separable attachment for pipes, cigar-holders, cigarette-holders and like articles, comprising in its construction a solid, imperforated head which is of a diameter not greater than the end of the mouthpiece and is flattened on its under side and provided on said side with ra dial grooves forming smoke-channels which extend from its center to its outer edge, the head on its outer surface being smooth and rounded, and provided with a small solid stem or shank constructed of spring-wire crimped or bent at intervals between the head and the end of the shank or stem, so as to impinge against the walls of the mouthpiece and hold the attachment in position by frictional cont ct without interfering with the passage of the sxoke, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I\have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
