HIRAM TAYLOR, OF SALEM, OHIO, AS'SI GNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN F.
' TESOHER, OF SAME PLACE.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,195, dated August 1'7, 1897. Application filed March 10,1897. Serial No. 626,836.' (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HIRAM TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Oolumbiana and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a view showing a portion of a fence, also showing one of the bases exposed to illustrate its position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the base. Fig. 3 is a view showing 'a portion of the base, also showing a portion of the fence-post properly connected thereto.
. Fig. 4 is a transverse section through line as,
Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the base.
The present inventionhas relation to fenceposts; and it consists in the novel arrangement hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the base or post-support, which is substantially of the form shown and is preferably formed of flat metal and of sufficient length to hold the posts a in an upright position after the bases have been driven into the ground.
For the purpose of providing a base that will be light and at the same time have a sufficient amount of strength the ribs b are provided and are located substantially as shown in the drawings, and as shown they are set in a short distance from the edges of the base, thereby bringing said ribs in such a position that the base can be driven into the ground more easilyby reason of the edges of the base extending out beyond the ribs.
For the purpose of providinga means for holding the fence-posts a in an upright position the flanges c, d, d, and d are provided and are located upon one side of the base, as illustrated in the drawings. The flanges d are formed L-shaped, and are so formed for (1 to support the bottom or lower end of the post a. For the purpose of binding or clamping the post a to the base A the clampingbolts cl are provided, which clamp-bolts are passed through the apertures (F, as illustrated in Fig. 4, by which arrangement the posts a are securely clamped to the base. By providing the flanges d and locating them as illustrated in the drawings they form braces or backing-for the clamping-bolt d thereby removing the strain from the center ortion of the base.
For the purpose of allowing the base to be driven into the ground without resistance the bottom or lower ends of the L-shaped flanges d are tapered, as illustrated in the drawings. In use the basesAare driven into the ground until their top or upper ends are level, or substantially level, with the surface of the ground, after which the posts a are attached to the bases. I might be desirable to attach the posts a to their bases before the bases are driven into the ground; but as to this it is simply a matter of judgment as to attaching the posts a to their bases.
For the purpose of shaping the bases so that they will better enter the ground the lower portion of said bases is tapered, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, which taper commences about midway between the upper and lower ends of said bases. For the purpose of preventing disintegration the bases may be, if desired, and should be galvanized, so as to better protect said bases.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv 1. As an improved article of manufacture a base provided with ribs 1), located upon the faces of the base a short distance from its edges, flanges d provided with shoulders to support the fence-post proper,-the flanges c, d, and d, the clamping-bolt (Z and the post a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. As an improved article of manufacture the purpose of providing shoulders, such as In some instances it 7 a base formed of metal galvanized and pro- In testimony that I claim the above I have vided with ribs 1), located upon the faces of hereunto subscribed my name in the presence the base, flanges d provided with shoulders of two Witnesses.
to support the fence-post proper, the flanges HIRAM TAYLOR. c, d, and d, the clamping-bolt d and the \Vitnesses:
post a, clamped to the base, substantially as WM. MCLERAN,
and for the purpose specified. G. V. ROBINSON.
